Any family Christmas traditions??

Original post by Betty

I had one as a kid and it turned into a funny story......

Every Christmas we would set out cookies, carrots and scotch for Santa. The cookies were if he got hungry, the carrots were for the reindeer and the scotch was b/c Santa would be cold and it would warm him up.....I figured this was a tradition in every household...

Well, about 4 years ago I found out differently...My brother was in college and they were talking about Christmas and traditions in one of his classes. He told his story and the ENTIRE class was freaking out saying 'what are you trying to get Santa drunk?'etc.......

He called me the next day and said 'Beth do you know people don't give Santa scotch on Christmas' I was like 'yeah they do' and he told me the story. We were HYSTERICAL laughing with my whole family b/c we thought EVERYONE did this

Thanks for letting me share a piece of my nutty childhood Merry Christmas

Re: Any family Christmas traditions??

That's so cute!! We usually get silly putty & slinkies in our stockings every year---this was the first year we didn't! My dad was so upset because he couldn't find silly putty anywhere! Meanwhile I told him after we opened everything this morning that I had a stash of silly putty in my room! he was so mad!! LOL

Edited to say that FH woke me up @ 6:40 AM to open gifts!! I admit i was half sleeping and just as excited! We had to wait till about 7:30ish when my parents got up!! LOL He's so cute!

LOL!!! Endlessluv, for YEARS we have gotten silly putty in our stockings! I totally forgot about that, I don't even remember when that stopped!

Here's another my mom does - EVERY year she give me, my dad, & my bros a box of chocolate covered cherries, no one ever eats them, lol, but she insists she must do it each year!

Since the early 80s when I met my stepmother and her mother, we made Xmas cookies. My grandmother always made these cranberry cookies and apricot cream cheese cookies. She passed away in early 2000 and for Christmas that year, I decided to make my grandmother's cookies as a tribute. My sister had the same idea, and my stepmother also decided to take up this tradition. That Xmas, we must have had over 500 of Grandma's cookies! I think we gave them away to anyone who walked in the front door!

Does anyone have the annual Christmas tree family fight? We always did over lights, placement of ornaments, etc. Last year was my first Christmas with my FI (it was his 1st Christmas since he's Jewish). Sure enough, the two of us continued this family tradition. He insisted that he knew how to put the tree stand on the tree and did it wrong! I was like, 'This is your first tree and you're already an expert?!' Needless to say, we laugh about it and the tradition continued this year.

Lauren-I am so glad I am not the only child who has been scarred for life by silly putty!! lol I used to love it when my dad showed me how to copy the comics unto it!!

Claudia--that is such a sweet tradition! I have a similar one! My great aunt (my grandmother's sister) who was like my mom's second mother and my second grandma-passed away in 1995. She was famous for her baking, especially these Christmas cookies she would make! We always try to duplicate them and we can use the SAME exact recipe and they just don't come out the same! BUT I carried on the tradition this year & those cookies I posted pics of-the ones I painted - I did it just for her! I usually put an angel cookie @ her gravesite-but this year wtih the snow and everyone being sick-I didn't get a change to go ANYWAY-that is the greatest tradition! Keep up the good work!!

I'd like to start a new tradition & leave Santa cheese!
Every see the commercial of what Santa leaves the family who left him cheese?

Jennbaby I love that commercial....I get such a kick out of seeing it.

The M&M commercial still cracks me up. THe one where the 2 M&M's are leaving santa the chocolates and santa sees them and says 'they do exist' and the red M&M says 'he does exist' and red and santa faint. LOL I love that commercial.

Maybe if I leave santa cheese he'll leave me the winning mega million ticket...that would be nice

How about the commercial where a person gives his/her spouse a Lexus for Christmas? I want to spend my next Christmas with the family that gives cars (a Lexus no less!) away as gifts! PS. Do these Lexus Christmas gifts come with bows, or do you have to buy the bow yourself?

This thread makes me laugh! Thanks!

As for those Lexus commercials... well, they drive me nuts! Those people recieving those cars don't even look excited!! COME ON!!! You got a Lexus for crying out loud, do a cartwheel or something! I don't know, just something that annoys me!

Re: Any family Christmas traditions??

My dad is big into x-mas, like most of the stories on this thread. But my FH family has a tradition that I never heard of until I met him... They would put all the kids ot bed and wake them up after midnight (after Santa came) to open gift. Which is fine, that I've hear of, but then the youngest would open gifts first and only one person could go at a time until they got to the oldest. We would be up until 4 am! Lucky for us there aren't many little kids anymore so we can open up gift earlier and get some sleep!

Re: Any family Christmas traditions??

OMG! I HATE Those LEXUS commercials!! How unrealistic--especialyl the one when the woman takes the polaroid of the dude opening the toy car and in the background is the new lexus--like the guy wouldn't see it in the driveway? give me a break! hahaha o well

that commercial where the little girl leaves santa cheese is the best! I have to leave the best cheese in town!

Re: Any family Christmas traditions??

I have the most funniest cheese story....
about 2 years ago it was FI (at the time boyfriend) me, and a whole bunch of our friends having a great sunday afternoon bowling.

I am short next to brian and our friend Frank says to me, wow your really short, ya know i have tools in my basement that can stretch you and that can make you grow. I turn to brian and said brian, frank wants to chinese torture me. brian says cool. and frank smiles. i say brian how could you, you just sold my soul to the devil. Frank says hey it could be worse. I said how, my soul has been sold to the devil. what could be worse? Franks says 'a world without cheese'

ever since Frank has been nicknamed 'cheese god'
