I am not marrying a doctor but as someone with a fairly crazy work schedule I can relate. I think it can be hard to have a significant other that may not work the 9-6 shift but long hours afford certain luxuries so I think you just need to take the good with the bad and love and be there for the person you are with. The worst thing one can do is lead their partner toward feeling guilty. If you work shorter hours, try to fill in that time with friends or hobbies - it will make things easier.

my sister is marrying a doctor. she understands that he will have a crazy schedule but knows they work it out. there is a lot of sacrifices that doctors make, but she knows that he will take care of them financially and she can take care of their kids and things will be fine!!

you'll make it work!!!

My FH is Director of Finance for a 1000 employee company and works 60-70 hours a week (including most Saturdays). I've gotten used to his coming home at 9:00 PM or later during the week but I still miss him all the time.

I try to do my errands and things in the evening so I stay busy for the few hours before I know he'll be home. That way I'm not staring at the clock. I also have been spending more time with my BP -- only one is married -- so it all works out. And I've been spending a LOT more time at the gym! One big plus!

My FH isn't a doctor but he works in CT 2-4 days a week and often stays there overnight. Its so hard and its going to be harder when we are living together and I am home alone.

i feel your pain. FH is going to be a dentist (one more year of school) and wants to specialize in oral surgery as if having to move wherever he gets matched for his residency weren't enough... he probably won't be around much either

It is the opposite, I am usually the one that is never around! FH and I try to set certain days that I will be home for dinner (even if dinner happens at 9pm) and I try to give him as much heads up as possible if I know I will have to work really late or on a weekend, or have a dreaded early meeting. He has been really supportive. So please be supportive of your hard-working FHs!

Not a dr but my fh works full time, goes to school after work and he also dj's so he's out almost every friday and saturday, some sundays, and sometimes during the week after work and school, he has some club to dj at so when he's home he's either playing music or on the computer doing something that has to do with music, doing homework or sleeping so sometimes I have to squeeze myself in there.

I can totally relate, FH is a pilot and is always flying

FH and I have had this problem since the beginning of our relationship because he works nights and goes to school full-time. Everyone is right - fill it with hobbies, go to the gym, and make sure you spend quality time when you're both home. Good luck!

Futurw Dr. Wife here! I've been with him since before Med school so I'm pretty used to the schedule he has! Actually, it's funny you posted this today because we just missed our 2nd Precana session last night because the hospital decded to book a second surgery! So sometimes it *****, and sometimes I secretly LOVE my alone time!!! But I always miss him when he's on call
What kind of Medicine is your FH in?

He won't be around the beginning - sorry to say! But as he progresses in his education, he'll be called on less and less for those late night emergencies. And once he's an attending, it won't be so bad!

Well as the medical doctor of the family (FH is a phD) I am the one who is never home. I work crazy hours and if I get the residency (cardio) I want it will even more crazy. I just make the most of the time we have together. Brian had good friends and hobbies which keep him busy. Sounds like you have the good support. Neuro is cool! (and hard!). GL to the both of you.
