I have a bunch of friends who did the LIU program. They also offer it on the Brentwood campus. Sadly I think they are all unemployed (or employed, but not as guidance counselors).

Re: Any Guidance counselors out there?
My masters program overlapped with the school counseling program at St. John's (offered on both the Queens and Staten Island campuses). If you have any questions, please FM.
FYI - School counseling is a very tough field to break into right now, there aren't many jobs available. :( If you do decide to go that route, make sure you do some extra internships to make yourself stand out, and start networking like crazy!

It is crazy how hard it is to find a job right now!

My SIL is a high school guidance counselor, but she got her masters in Albany. I believe she majored in psych and got her masters for counseling.

Re: Any Guidance counselors out there?
I am (FINALLY) a guidance counselor. It took me 2.5 years of leave replacements to get a perm job this fall. I also had 5.5 years of experience working on the college level. I went to Hofstra. It is a horrendous field to get a job in and to be perfectly honest, I try and dissuade people from going into this field. It is a long program and it's very discouraging once you start looking for a job. It's just as hard to get leaves as to get perm jobs. I know A LOT of people who gave up and went in other career directions after looking for a long time. There are way too many schools on LI and the NY metro area that have guidance programs and there are literally hundreds of people looking for jobs. I've heard that the average amount of resumes that are sent it for each posting is between 400-600. So, to even get an interview sometimes, seems like a miracle!! I had a lot of interviews because I had good experience on the college level and made excellent connections through my leaves, but much of it is truly who you know. If you are bilingual in Spanish, that would help, because in the past couple of years there are more postings for bilingual counselors, but honestly, I'd think long and hard about going into this field. Sorry this is so long, but as someone who has been through the trenches in this, I wanted to give you an honest look at the job market.

I couldn't agree more. I am a high school counselor and thankfully I got a year leave replacement, then a full time position. I believe many schools (Post) accept WAY too many people. I know my dept. won't need to hire a new counselor for at least 10 years. And they sure aren't adding any new positions. I went to Hofstra which has much less people in the program under 25 which is more realistic. Unfortunately many schools are totally flooding the market with counselors and many do not find jobs.
FM me if you want more info.
P.S. I do LOVE my job, though and would do it all over again!

Re: Any Guidance counselors out there?
I completely agree with the above posts. I have been a school counselor for 10 years- it was a lot easier to get a job back then but still hell. I think I got lucky getting a job in LI after looking for 3 months and about 30 interviews.
If you are planning to leave the state however, its a LOT easier to get a job. I got a job here in CA after looking for 3 days in the middle of July. Again, I think it was luck- they were really desperate to fill the position. The job is not really what you think either- for six years I ran the special ed department at my school and it was hell. Now I am a dean and love it but it took ten years to get there.
So good luck with your decision- there are plenty of other ways to work with children in counseling other than schools. I got my master's in Marriage and Family therapy and will be license hopefully in June. I will probably start my own practice and leave schools entirely.

Re: Any Guidance counselors out there?
hello. everything they said about the LI job market for school counselors is true...its horrible. i will be graduating this may with my ba in psych and in the next few months i will be applying to about 5 masters programs in school counseling in NC bc fi and i want to relocate to an affordable place to live (aka not LI) and a place where i would be able to get a job as a school counselor. there are a bunch of programs locally that push out 100's an 100's of graduates a year and there is no where for them to work...its highly unethical of these programsto do so bc they know there is not a high need for so many graduates. liu can easily be your 'safety school'---they don't even require GRE's. then there is hofstra, st johns, cuny schools, and many programs in the city. hopefully i will get into a school in NC, if not, liu in brentwood is my safety school and i will have to complete the prgram there and then move. best of luck to ya! ~lacey
