I am catholic, DH is Jewish. Right now we live in a basement apartment in my in laws house. Dh's mother is very superstitious and says that we should not have ANY baby things in the house. She does not like to see any sonogram pictures or even talk about the baby, because she says it is bad luck... So unfortunately we haven't been able to share any of the excitement with her... Also, she is not inviting any of her friends to my baby shower because she said that Jewish people don't celebrate until after the baby is born... I totally respect that since that is what she believes. Anyway, she told us she was going to buy us our crib and changing table BUT she is not going to order them until after the baby is born... My MIL has the tendancy to be a drama queen, so I am wondering for anyone who is Jewish, is this normal or do you think she is being a bit extreme? And were you superstitious and not buy anything (even baby furniture) until after the baby was born? If so, where did the baby sleep, since I've been reading that it takes weeks to order a crib.
ETA - Just so you know the background, my mil was NOT religious until DH and I got engaged. They never celebrated any holidays or traditions until we started planning the wedding... Since then, she throws a lot of 'Jewish people dont do that' comments at me, so half the time I dont know if she is being sincer or if she's picking on me. Thanks!

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
It's extreme. Even my Grandmother, who is VERY religious, has started knitting for the baby. My mom would prefer if we waited until a little later to order the furniture, and she doesn't really want us to have any baby stuff in the house right now, but she's kind of OK with whatever we decide. I have a lot of Jewish friends, and they have all ordered their cribs prior to the baby being born.

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
I am Irish Catholic and my Mom and Nana both believe that nothing should be brought into the house for the baby until after the baby is born. I mean if anyone gives me anything baby related it stays at her house. I guess it sounds a little cooky. But she does talk about the baby and looks at sono pics but nothing is allowed in my apt if it is baby related.....

I have not heard of that - I am Jewish. I've heard not having anything until the first trimaster is up - because at that point the pregnancy is still risky and you don't want to have everything and have a problem. But other than that, really nothing.
It sounds like an old tradition, when having babies was risky; not to get attached to the baby until you know for sure its healthy and fine. By having 'baby' stuff, you get more and more attached.

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
my moh is jewish, and when her SIL was pregnant much of her family wouldn't buy anything until after the baby was born. Mostly it was the older members of the family that really went with the superstition (the baby's great grand parents mostly). My friend, on the other hand, was buying gifts the second she found out the child existed

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
That is extreme. I am jewish - we are not setting up the nursery or really bringing anything in the house until after the baby is born.
I also will not (probably) have a shower.
I will on the other hand order everything and the stores will hold the merchandise. When you are in labor you call them and they will deliver within 24 hours - so my family will be around to set up the nursery.
We are a pretty traditional jewish family -but we still share pics of the sonograms - pick out names, and get excited about the baby.

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
I know that none of my Jewish friends bought one thing for the baby b/f they arrived. They went to Denny's or stores like it, picked out what they wanted and they pack it up until the birth - the same w/ the furniture. Nothing in the house b/f b/c of bad luck.
Talking about it is something different -- that isn't a Jewish thing -- haven't heard of that one yet... I know that a shower is def. not a Jewish thing either.
But I am live & let live...I meant to add that on. I had a Jewish friend who did have a shower and it was fun -- she lives overseas and used the birth as an opportunity to get her girlfriends together b/c we are all over the place!

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
Thanks so much for everyone's input! I have a lot to learn when it comes to traditions and I dont want to offend anyone in my family. My MIL is not the best person to teach me about the traditions though, she is very upset that we are raising the baby catholic so tends to be on the extreme end of everything. We spoke to her, because she offered to buy the furniture, and she has agreed to go to Babies R Us to see how long it will take to order. She said she would order it, if we dont set it up until after the baby is born. So we've all agreed to compromise. Again thanks to everyone for the info!

its a little extreme, my mom didnt want anything in my house but we ordered the furniture like four months before she was born, my mom just didnt have it delivered till I was in the hospital. She gave in and made me a shower in my ninth month which most Jewish moms dont do lol and I had to keep everything in her house

Re: Any Jewish Moms or superstitious moms??
I am Jewish and it's the same in our family. My Mom and Grand'ma are always making sure that we don't have anything baby-related in the house. What ever we do have, like a couple of things that we picked up from my GF for the baby, is kept at my parent's appartment.
However, we are going to order the crib to be delivered in time for the baby. It will stay in my parent's house and DH will put it together while I am in the hospital.
I think it's OK to order things since it takes quite a few weeks for them to come in, as long as you don't actually have a put together, empty crib standing in your house for months before the baby's arrival. That what considered bad luck!
