I know that some of you out there are nurses (danirn) and I know you prolly hate it when people ask you questions such as this one but I was wondering if you could maybe help me..
I have a sinus infection and my doc prescribed antobiotic augmentin and was supposed to prescribe a decongestant (everything is in my head, nose and especially my ears) and she prescribed what it seems to be a cough suppressent. The name of it is promethazine dm...I know the dm means decongestant but its not my chest that needs it...do you know if this is also used for sinus congestion?? Thank you so much!!!
I need to get better fast..pre k graduation is Wednesday!!!!!!! And I am the head teacher

It will help with your sinus congestion too, but just watch out, promethazine can make you very drowsy and also give you bad cotton mouth so drink lots of fluid too

Re: Any nurses out there?
It means there is 120 milliliters in the bottle, and maximum daily dosage is 20 milliliters. This is what it means to me, I would have to see the bottles label to know for sure..Hope this helps.
Edited to say: Hi Dani, my fellow nurse! How are you feeling? (If I remember correctly, you hurt your back didnt you )

Re: Any nurses out there?
I have a quick question for you nurses -I was talking about sinus infections with someone today who told me that they are NEVER contaigious - that does not sound right to me - is that true?

Re: Any nurses out there?
I would say that if the infection is caused by a bacteria or virus and someone was spreading them by sneezing openly, or touching thier mucus and touching objects such as door handles (yuk) than I would think it would be contageous. If it was caused by allergies, such as dust or pollen than it wouldnt be contageous. How would someone know without seeing the doctor if thier nose is stuffy because of allergies or an infection? (that is assuming the person had no known history of allergies). They may be spreading a cold. This is my take on it, if any nurses disagree feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Any nurses out there?
Thank you for confirming what I already thought I knew - the person I'm doing my pro bono with - his secretary is a bit odd - I was telling her I was getting over a sinus infection - but not to worry that I'm on antibiotics for a few days now - so I shouldn't be contaigious - and she tells me well I wasn't it is impossible to get sick from you b.c they are NEVER contaigious. I told her I thought she was incorrect and repeated something along the lines of what you said - but she told me I had NO idea what I was talking about and shouldn't be saying things if I didn't know what I was talking about...as I said she is strange... so I figured I would ask and see if I was wrong

Re: Any nurses out there?
Tell her that she was right after all. Tell her that the bacteria are finding your sinuses too comfortable to leave, so therefore you cant be contagious! What were we thinking Christine! Damn, after all your years of law school and all my nursing school, we needed her educated mind to figure that out for us! Tell her that you know nurses on LIW, and if she wants to debate about illness, I'm game. BTW, I hope you are feeling better soon!

Re: Any nurses out there?
Ugh yeah I'm much better this has actually been a pretty good year I usually get about 6-8 sinus infectins a year I have only had 3 since August - they told me this year that I need sinus surgery - not emergency - but really should do it - apparently my right side if pretty blocked - I don't know if I should do it though - I have a couple of friends who did it and it didn't do much for them...lol

My aunt has the same thing, with the repeat sinus infections. She had the surgery because hers was so bad, but she still has problems although not as bad as before. Glad to hear that you are feeling better! Keep me posted, and feel free to ask for any help any time!
