Any NYC girls planning to move to LI with FH (or did so already)

Any NYC girls planning to move to LI with FH (or did so already)

Are there any girls here from NYC who are going to eventually live in LI? Or has anyone already done the move? If so how was the adjustment? I'm going to be moving to LI probably soon after we're married. I'd love to know what to expect.

I am a NYC girl- and when I lived in LI for a year it took me a LONG time to adjust. I am used to hearing racing on the blvd at night, trucks coming off the bridge, fire engines at all hours- and just about everything I needed in walking distance.

After a while- I did get used to it but when I moved back to queens I forgot how much I missed it. I am most likely going to move to LI when I get married and as much as I look forward to it- I am not looking forward to leaving the noise behind. As odd as it sounds- it is just what I grew up hearing.

I lived in Brooklyn since I was 6 and just moved in with FH to Long Island last September. It was pretty easy to get used to it but all my friends (except my best friend, who also moved to long island) and family live in Brooklyn. I don't see them as often since they are not 10 minutes away but it's not like we're in a different state where it's not possible to see them if I wanted to.

I think it depends on where you move, I was just talking to someone who moved to a new town and said it was hard, people were not open.
So what towns are friendly for newcomers?

I have lots of family on LI (Westbury, Garden City, Elmont) and b/c I live right off of the Belt Pkwy in Bk, I spend 90% of my leisure time out there. FH wants to move right after the wedding so I'm looking for an apt. now. Not too far though b/c I work in the city. But I really think we'll handle the adjustment fine, save lots of gas and I probably won't miss Brooklyn!

Leaving from my 45th & 5th apt was like leaving your single life behind.... once you move out, you know there's should be a great reason to do it :)

IIt's been a year and a half now but I just moved to Astoria so it wasn't that bad... I am sure you'd get used to LI life with your FH

I grew up in Brooklyn and moved to LI when I was 15 and I hated it and wanted to go back. Now I love it and when I go back to the city it feels chaotic to me. I will always miss the noise, always seeing people around, and everything in walking distance but you get used to the quieter lifestyle and the benefits like being able to park without going around the block fifty times!!!

I grew up in Queens, FH in Bk...We just bought a house in Massapequa and have been living there for about 2 weeeks now...
its amazing. I love everything about it..B/c its so quiet, you almost feel like you're on vacation somewhere...I drive down the street and my neighbors wave...its really surreal-but in a good way....its definitely a chance, but Im adjusted to it 100%-b/c its a welcomed change...

I will be moving from Astoria where I've lived all my life to LI, my FH lives there.
It's going to be a HUUUUUGE adjustment for me. I actually like the noise and it feels so lively. I love the fact that I can leave my home at 3 AM and there are people actually walking the streets and stores and restaurants open.

I live in Astoria too. Where does your FH live? We are looking in the Babylon area. It's kinda far especially since we both commute to the city but we like the area.

He lives in Plainview/Bethpage. I'm not sure how it works out there, his address is Plainview but school district is Bethpage. It's a really beautiful area and it takes me about 30 min from Astoria to get there. I'm really not too familiar with other parts of LI.

Plainview and Bethpage are nice areas. We may look into that area too.. We'd probably prefer to live in Bethpage only because if we live in Plainview we'd have to drive to another town to take the LIRR. We'd rather live in a town that has a LIRR station (we're picky about that). But it's definitely a nice area and pretty close to Queens.

Oh- and you have FM!

I am going to make the move to LI eventually (we both grew up on the island) but I think we are staying in Manhattan for at least another 5 years after we are married.

Are you nervous about the transition to owning a car and driving everywhere? I am definitely looking forward to move space in a house but not having to drive cars!

Well I own a car now but I hardly use it. I put less than 3,000 miles a year on it LOL. I think I'm mostly nervous about the commute to work being a PITA. I'm definitely going to miss the convenience of Queens (like walking 10 minutes to go to the gym, the supermarket, the bank etc). All of my friends are in Queens too so I'll miss being able to grab dinner at the last minute or going out for a few drinks. Once we live in LI, obviously I can still see my friends but I'll probably find myself saying 'hmm is it woth the trip to Queens just to have a few drinks?' ya know what i mean? My parents live in Astoria so I'll obviously be seeing them every so often.

I had an apt on 60th and 1st for 3 years with a roomie. I LOVED IT!! But rent kept climbing and we both decided to go our separate ways. I miss the hustle and bustle too, but most of our friend live out on the island, so we were going there for most of the weekend (except Saturday nights). I commute into the city everyday, so the change of environment after crazy work days is nice. PLUS, my apt now is at least 3 times bigger and $600 less in rent! Thats pretty helpful for saving up for the wedding

I lived at 61st and 1st until I moved in with FH to apartment at 63rd and 1st (where we are now!) How fun was it living right next to BB&B?

yea east siders..I'm at 1st and 88th. I actually had a UES GTG back in '08. We were the upper east brides.

I was commuting to Melville for 2.5 years, it was kind of a nightmare.
