I have the opposite... I went to a wedding there and it was so big, in so many rooms I missed the desert hour! I missed the cake! But it is beautiful!

I think what happens is that you go in expecting so much more only to find that when you break it down, it's like every other reception hall - I've heard this from so many people - except they have a $15k site fee on top of everything else . It's grand and all, but I wasn't that impressed with the layout or the food. JMO - don't mean to offend.

I heard that the acoustics weren't so great.

Let me start by saying that, but for the cost, we would have gone with Oheka.

But, that said, I don't think it's absolutely perfect, especially if you are having a very large reception. Although they have opened the new reception room, it is architecturally inconsistent with the rest of the castle and does, indeed, look like many other reception hall ballrooms. For us, because we knew that our guests would be spending most of their time in that room, we felt it wasn't worth the money.

BUT, if you are having a smaller reception, one that could be accommodated in the older ballroom (and if the older ballroom has windows - I don't remember whether there are windows) I think it's really really fabulous. The service they provide is incredible, and the notion of having the castle to yourself is wonderfully appealing.

Good luck!

Re: Any Oheka negatives besides cost?

we decided against Oheka for the following reasons:

it had a cold feeling to it with all the stone (which is a preference)

the main room was a bit small...I think it would have fit 150 comfortably...but I can't be for sure...

A dear family friend(& guest at our wedding) was our florist and I would not have wanted to use anyone but him...but Oheka requires using one of their florists

that being said...it is really an amazing place...and it was a really tough decision for us...I sometimes think how nice it would have been there...but I still loved where we did get married

Let me address some of the issues discussed in the previous posts:

You do not need to use one of Oheka's vendors. However, the vendor you select needs to have insurance.

The new room looked very different when it was first unveiled at the Expo. However, I saw it two weeks ago. It looks completely different and in the same style as the rest of the place. They have added a ton of molding and chanderliers.

Some people decide to have dessert in different rooms. However, you don't have to do this. I agree with the previous post who experienced this. I think it is a bad idea and breaks up the party. I am going to have it in the same room.

In terms of the negatives, I would say that the vendors really get you with price because they know it is an Oheka wedding. The other problem is that you really can't select such an amazing place and then skimp on the other stuff IMO.

I think that every place has their negatives. For me, Oheka was the best choice. But you need to think about what things are a priority.

I am expecting about 100 guests and I feel that with Oheka there are so many little rooms, that will take away from the main focus. The main focus being orchestra and so on. I feel like the smaller ballroom is also constructed like a rectangle which makes the dance floor seem so small and tight.

I really love it, but I think its really great for a summer time wedding. That way you can enjoy the property and views.

I am getting married at the Bourne Mansion. It's not Oheka, obviously, but you should check it out, it's GORGEOUS!

Re: Any Oheka negatives besides cost?

Hi~

I am getting married at Oheka on a Sat in 2004. The new room in Oheak is magnificient. Like am470 said it has chenged dramatically since the unveiling. They have added chandeliers and moldings and they said that it will match the rest of the castle exactly. He said they willc ontinue to do this through the fall. So if that is a concern you should ask them and they will fill you in.

I am only having 150 guests and I was concerned about people 'roaming' around. So what I am going to do is after my reception starts close all the other doors to the othe rooms. Plus if you have a good music, I dont think you will have to worry too much about this. Also with the desert cafe, we have decided to do that during the Jazz hour in the old ballroom, that way when everyone leaves the room they can be entertained and you dont waist the last hour of the band during the reception. If you are not adding the Jazz hour, I would do it in the reception room or opt for a plated desert.

As far as the cost goes, it is very expensive, but in my opinion it will be owrth every $$$$. I worked out the numbers and although it is alot you are getting ALOT for your $$.

Also did you speak to them about their minimums? I don't think with the new room they will do 100?
Good Luck with your decision.

i heard little food for the price. guests said that they were hungry after. however, i have never been to a wedding there so please don't quote me. just what a friend said- i could be wrong.

having said that, there are a LOT of positives to Pheka that far outweigh the negatives! IMO! Hello, the view, the pictures, the grounds!!!

am...I just wanted to say...I LOVE LOVE Oheka...it was a close close second for us...

I am happy that the vendor policy changed...this was not the case in 2001 when we were looking...and it was something that we asked every hall...

too bad...that couldn't have made the difference for us!!

I just wanted to mention what it was that made us not choose it...

I am a little surprised to hear the food comments. I am gettingmarried at Oheka in 2004 and I thought I didn't have anything to worry about. I hope I made the right choice

Re: Any Oheka negatives besides cost?

every body is going to have their own opinion of the place. I went to a wedding at Oheka a few years back and it was gorgeous. the room we were in for the reception was small but for that wedding it was right. The food was good from what I remember but nothing to write home about. The grounds are gorgeous. They were in the middle of recontructing the bridal suites so that to me was a turnoff because they put us in the under contruction room which had all tools and stuff from the construction. The cocktail hour was great because it was outdoors.

the place is $$$. If you can do it, that is wonderful. I don't come from a family that could afford Oheka and to me there are places out there that are just as beautiful.
But to each is own.
