My DH has been suggesting that we start looking into westchester or orange counties. Although I have my heart set on nassau, I thought it couldn't hurt to look. Orange county is out of the question because I don't want to cross the tappan zee every day and it is just too far from the island and everyone I love!
What does everyone think of white plains? I've heard the schools are pretty good and it's not that far away...

White Plains is very nice. You can commute to NYC in 1 hour, there's great shopping (The Galleria Mall, The Westchester Mall and they just built a Fortunoff there too) and alot of good restaurants in the area.
I don't know too much about the school system but I don't think it's bad.

WP is very nice but also very expensive. I heard that taxes can rival Nassau County.

WP is really nice, lots of nice restaurants and shopping, but the taxes and prices of homes are $$$$ esp. in the good area. (there is a not so nice section of wp too) We live two miles away in Hartsdale. We bought a townhouse and we pay just as much in property taxes as my parents do in Wantagh!!
I was surprised at how hight the taxes and prices of home were when we first started looking in Westchester. I found LI to be a little bit cheaper and I personally think you get more house for your money on LI.
Sorry for rambling on, LOL. I'm not sure of the school district but I think it is pretty good from what I have heard and the research I have done.

FH and I moved to White Plains a little over a year ago. We moved mostly because I was commuting from LI to Pleasantville and it was over an our each way. We really like it here, Fm me if you have any questions.

The property taxes in the city of WP are VERY reasonable. The prices of the homes in the desiarble areas such as the highlands and Gedney are pricey(aprox $500k and up), but the taxes are still relatively low ($5K) in comparison to other towns in Westchester.
Good luck in your search, if it wasn't for our families and our baby we would still be in WP.

We are thinking of looking at co-ops in Scarsdale or Tuckahoe- the Eastchester school district is VERY good- and such a short commute to the city!
