any other edge brides?

any other edge brides?

my FH and i are both straight edge, so certain things with our reception are going to be different. we're requesting that certain foods not be cooked with alcohol, although there will be an open bar for friends and family who do drink. we will not be having a champagne toast, instead we will be having a cream soda toast. looks the same as champagne, only its not alcohol and its something thats very us. just wondering if theres any other edge brides out there, itd be great to have a fellow bride to talk to about things like favors (they're all either bottle openers or bottle stoppers, clearly not our thing)

Ive never been to a wedding that was like that and I think if I had been, I'd think it was very strange... Then again, I dont know you or your family and it could make perfect sense for you guys...

Any reason why you are so against alcohol? If you're worried about drunks, you're having an open bar so guests will get their liquor one way or another... And when you cook with alcohol, it evaporates so I dont see that being much of an issue I dunno... just odd to me... Never heard of this before

We did a DIY favor of narcissus bulbs in a glass pot. It took a while to assemble all of them but everyone loved them.

They are straight edge which means no drugs, alcohol or any thing else. There are a lot of people out there like this (I'm not, but know a lot of people who are). I think it's nice that they are trying to be considerate of their guests who don't subscribe to this sort of lifestyle change.

we choose not to drink, do drugs, things like that. the only real difference is we're not having a champagne toast. if anything, its something people will remember, not look down on. if we're so worried about drunks? i'm not even going to comment on that statement. and not all the alcohol evaporates. its a personal choice that not even all edge people believe, but my FH and i prefer not to have foods cooked or containing alcohol.

there are lots of different favor ideas you can do - check out some of the reviews on the brides review board - they usually post pictures of their favor in their post....i still dont have any idea what we are doing for favors - maybe an ornament or a mini yankee candle (in holiday scents)

Since your wedding is in the spring...you could go with flower seeds or tree seeds. I've seen these with a cute poem about 'our love in bloom' or something like that.

Don't worry, there are lots of other ideas for favors! DH and I didn't want to get bottle stoppers either because we know not everyone is into drinking. Visit some wedding favor shops or look online - you'll find tons of other ideas. We gave out candy dishes, and at other weddings we've received favors like coasters, heart-shaped measuring spoons, pretty candles, picture frames, small photo albums, etc. don't worry, you'll find something!
And, btw, I love the cream soda idea! yummy!

I' m having sparkling cider for my toast Theres many reasons why people don't serve alcohol. Personal, religious, etc. The event is still a wedding with or without the alcohol. To each his own..

i'm not doing this, but i know of a bunch of people who are (my one friend doesn't even want caffeinated soda served). and i'm having a vegetarian reception, so while it's not the same, i understand the flak you can get from other people because it's 'different' (god forbid).

i think the cream soda idea is really cute. it's especially nice because it says a lot about you and your personalities and you can have children (if attending) included in the toast.

as for favors, there are SO many ideas out there to choose from - donations to your favorite charity (i want to do the aspca), cds with songs from your wedding/relationship, trees (my cousin did this - very cute), etc. there's also a website that has all kinds of alternative gifts you can purchase (like buying books for a school in africa) or donate to that could be nice if that's your thing.

hth! and congrats on being able to stand up for what you believe in!

I wish I could have a vegetarian wedding, but my bacon-loving meat-eating FH would not be happy. He's never cooked meat in the house (only on the grill), so I'm willing to compromise on the reception. (sometimes I feel like the wedding would be so much easier if he didn't have an opinion...kidding...!). It would make things so much less expensive, though!

I think most of the brides on here don't do wine stoppers/corkscrews. We're planning on doing a donation to a camp that FH works at, for kids with chronic illnesses. We (read: me) might do another favor...perhaps chocolate covered things...like cookies or pretzels. DIYing it up!

And good for you, doing what you and FH want. It's hard NOT to bow to the pressure of family, friends, and expectations.

Re: any other edge brides?

I ended up donating money to a charity and having a tree planted in a national forest for every guest. I just printed up little cards that let the guests know about it. No one seemed to mind not getting favors...in fact, we had a lot of people tell us how much the liked the donation idea.

We didn't drink either at our wedding...not so much because of personal beliefs, but we aren't big drinkers. We also get the 'asian flush' and turn bright red with one sip of alcohol...doesn't make for pretty pictures.

You could also use that sparkling apple cider they had in the supermarkets!

Re: any other edge brides?

well our wedding was somewhat 'edge' i guess..but more for AA reasons than the 'choice' not to drink....we had NO toasts...but more for the reason we didn't want a certain family member to have the opportunity to speak....we did instead have my Dad lead grace before dinner (no he wasn't the problem one)

...and instead of an open bar we had unlimited beer & wine (a huge assortment of wine from local wineries) and a signature drink...and if you really needed something besides that you could go inside & pay at the bar in the restaurant...it wasn't because of cost but because of alcoholism...believe me we spoiled our guests with unlimited full lobsters! (also our wedding was at 3pm on a Friday)

And most of our guests know our personal situation and had no issues with any of it...do what's best for you...it's your wedding...

ETA: Oh and as for favors i gave sets of blank notecards with my photography of the Hamptons on it...since we live there & that's where our wedding was...and many guests were OOTers.

More pics and info in my review

Re: any other edge brides?

my hubby & i have pretty solid values....we did have open bar because i feel having the option of alcohol is someone ettiquette (jmo) at a formal event(which our wedding was)..but we asked the DJ to not play anything explicit/sexual songs, and we didn't have the catcher of the garter go up the bo-k catcher's leg...instead we played a fun goofy song & i danced with the guy & my hubby danced with the girl. it was fun & something a little different If the soda toast is something that suits u guys & people will find cute then do it - everyone is different...but honestly if u're having an open bar i dont see the huge deal in champagne?? ...what about just having the soda for you two??? Or what about sparkling cider?? just throwing ideas out there ANYWAYS, everyone's wedding is different - so dont worry about what other people think. i never judge. do what u do & dont worry about the rest. I do however agree that when food is cooked with alcohol(and it's cooked right, which it will be since ur at a wedding venue) it DOES evaporate the alcohol in the product. I have family in the restaurant business and it's just the plain old truth. ANYWAYS, to each is own! good luck with everything

again i have to say that i really DO think the creme soda idea is cute especially if everyone knows it to be 'you guys' - just shows personality!
