I am having the hardest time figuring out where i should order my dress.
I live in San Diego. My fiance is in the military and is currently deployed so i have been in NY with family for a few weeks to book some vendors.
Now I dont know if I should order my dress in NY or CA.
I will not be able to fly back to NY for fittings so I need someone who can do it one week before the wedding OR order it in CA and fly with the dress, which i dont want to do bc ill have all of my honeymoon luggage as well.
Are there any out of state brides? What did you do about your dress?

I'm out of state, but only a couple of states over in PA. So I'm probably not much help because I don't have to fly my dress anywhere. I decided to buy my dress close to home for the convenience of fittings nearby. I will have to drive it up to NY for the wedding. I'd probably buy it close to home if I were as far as you. You don't want to risk not having enough time for alterations. GL!

I am from San Francisco and got married on LI this past summer. I had the same problem!
However - it actually turned out to work perfectly.
I ordered my dress in San Francisco, and was able to buy it TAX FREE! because i was having it shipped to NY.
My dress shop even allowed me to actually have it shipped to San Francisco first for alterations, then once it was done they shipped it along with my veil, shoes (all tax free!) to NY.
I ended up shipping it about 2 weeks before the wedding and then when it arrived I was going to have it steamed etc (if needed). My dress was all lace so I ended up not needing to steam it - but i let myself enough time just in case.
This worked out really well and if you trust your dress vendor to pack and ship it well then it is no problem at all!

I was out of state (FL). I ordered my dress in FL, did all my fittings here, and carried it on the plane. No problems at all....

I ordered mine in NY and it actually worked out well now b/c I have a wedding in NY to go home in a few months.. But before that, I was wishing I had bought it here (TX) to avoid all the stress of having to go back home to NY to do my fittings.

Wow, that is so funny. I live in San Fran & am getting married back on LI! I actually ordered my dress in NY (my mom really wanted to be with me when I ordered my dress). I wish I would have thought about the tax free aspect of it before ordering. I would have just went back to SF and found it. My dress shop told me I will need to go back for a fitting a month before, and then a week before. Im just going to have to take a quick weekend trip back the month before, and then the week before, I will be back in NY anyway. I'm heading back early to get all of my last minute preparations done. So hopefully it all works out.

This is totally off your topic but I was wondering since there are a few out of state brides from California. Are there any website such as LIF or Li weddings gears towards California residents? I recently moved from nyc to California. Looking for a website to help me with the move.

I did the out of state thing as well. I was able to fly back a couple times and have the fittings done when I went back to NJ. I'm in FL.
It's what you are comfortable with most places do not do fittings until 1-2 months out? or that's how mine was. Since mine was a 'perfect' fit... and go figure 4 days before the last fitting they decided it needed an alteration
I would say if you found a dress in NY do that NY thing. If you are coming back a couple weeks before your wedding you should be fine. However, it seems like a few brides have traveled with their dresses and it was jsut as easy. I think that may be the best way to calm the nerves to be able to see your dress and do fittings as you need. For me I did not want to travel with my dress. The trip from NJ to LI was enough traveling for my dress.

I live in MASS. i am getting my dress here and will bring it down to my moms a few months before the wedding when im there for appointments. luckily i planned this out a while ago and my dress will be in in plenty of time. There was no way i could get to NY for fittings, etc.
