Any recommendations for mortgage brokers?

Any recommendations for mortgage brokers?

Everyone keeps telling us to get preapproved now that interest rates are low.... how do we start this... just start calling banks.... can you get preapproved by more than one mtg. company?

I'm so clueless - you would never know I worked for 5 years in a mtg. dept when I was in college - 10 years ago. I forgot everything!! Actually, probably didn't pay that close attention to it back then...

I dont know a lot of info on this - just be careful about going to a lot of different mortgage companies - because each time a credit check is done on you your credit rating goes down.

I just found this out when i was trying to increase my credit card limit!

My only advice is be careful. The 1st broker I used tried to rip us off. She didnt give us the good faith estimate until I showed up at the office demanding it, also she told us no points or origination fee and when I got the estimate there they were. Also, she pre-approved us for FHA telling us thats all we could get and I found out that we were able to get a 30yr convention mtge from someone else for 1/2% less (maybe even more, since rates dropped and I did not lock in yet), no points, no origination fee and no MPI or MIP that FHA loans require. I still pay PMI because I am not putting down 20%. The woman I am using is wonderful and gave me the good faith estimate within 3 days without me even calling her. Everything she said is in writing with no surprises. Also, definately get a pre-approval any bank or mtge company can give you this (usually free) because I couldnt get a real estate agent to even show me houses without it. Hope this helps.

i used my regular bank and didn't have any problems. all of my accounts are in one place, and it makes life easy - i can just transfer money from our savings to pay the mortgage.
