Any recommendations on Pre-natal vitamins?

Tammy told me Folic Acid. What else should I take?

And also, what name brand should I be looking at or is any run of the bill name brand OK?

I take the prenatals from GNC. I am going to the doctor in January...don't know if she will give me prescription ones or not. I take the GNC Prenatals with iron. They have it without iron too.

My RE and my GYN both suggested Centrum. I was on prescription prenatals but they were huge! yuck!

Jenn, not all prescription ones are huge, I HATED the huge ones too, made me gag.
I take DUET, they are petite and perfect!
My OB also always gives me tons of samples.

Sassy-there are chewables also if you prefer that. They annoy me because it gets all stuck in my teeth.
My Dr gave me many different samples and told me to let her know which ones I liked and thats how I chose.

I forgot which one's I took before I was PG, but the one's I've been taking since I got a Prescription are called Prenate GT. They're purple and gel coated, so they go down easy. They're not big at all. I can't take big pills. I don't get any side effects either with them. They cost $30.00 for a 3 month supply. I highly recommend them!

I took Duet also and had no problems.

Melissa, Prenate was one of the ones that I thought was too big. As much as I love purple , I had to switch.

I have seen those Duets, they are tiny!
But when 2 diff. doctors both reccomended Centrum, I was happy cause we stock up on them anyway (DH takes them also daily)

Anna the huge ones I had were like horsepills I had to cut them into 4!!!

I have always taken the generic version of Duet from the Genovese/Eckerd chain since I found out I was PG. Doc saw no need to give me a Rx for them. They are kind of big, but I get one down every day with a glass of cold water!!

Before getting PG, I took Women's One A Day which has 400 mcg of folic acid. That's also fine.

I'm taking Women's One A Day, doc said it was fine. Folic and Calcium are most important.

I take Nestab too. I think Natatab is the generic and I get that one since it only costs about $2.

Re: Any recommendations on Pre-natal vitamins?

Liz, all prenatal vitamins (and most regular multivitamins) have folic acid. All you need is 400 mcg.
Edited to explain folic acid.
It helps prevent birth defects, specifically neurologic problems like spina bifida. The spinal cord is formed very early, before most women would know they are pregnant. You lose the benefit if you start taking the vitamins after that point. Anyone TTC should be taking a mulivitamin with folic acid. It's also in a lot of foods so if you hate vitamins, its not the end of the world

I'm glad everyone has had so much success with Duet. My OB gave me a ton of samples too and those are the ones I was going to ask for the scrip for.

my OB/GYN gave me a prescription for Duet, he seemed to like those the best.

I use Pre-Nate. They are purple and huge - but I haven't had a problem getting them down. I am good that way!

Thanks Everyone, I'll get a vitamin this weekend and make sure it has everything recommended here. Then when I go to the GYN on 1/9, I'll see if she wants me to take prescription ones

I told my GYN I was taking the store brand from Target and he said those were fine. (I think they are a bit over 400mg of folic acid) they are brown and not big at all. I hate the big pills too!!
