Any Sci Fi/Fantasy Readers in here? I need a book idea..

Im sooooooooooo disappointed. i have been waiting for George R.R. Martin's latest book in his series... supposed to be out Aug 24 then pushed to Sept 4 now it's pushed to APRIL 2004!!!

Im an avid reader to say the least. I run through 300 page books in about two working days. Im running out of ideas.

I also read Nora Roberts (I owe everything so far except Mysterious) and Mystery like patterson and such (I got his autograph!) but I am in the mood for the unreal.

Help!

Have you ever read the Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell? There is a sequel (maybe???), but the book is really good and along the scifi/fantasy lines... it takes place in the future.

I love the Mercedes Lackey trilogy 'The Last Herald Mage'

She is my favorite romantic fantasy writer.

Marcia..

I've read all of Mercedes Lackey's Herald Series.. even the non series ones.

Ive read all of David Eddings' Belgarath series.

I own every Nora Roberts book from silhouette to the last few months (she came out with more)

Read the all of the Terry Brooks series

All of George R R Martin's series

All of Terry GoodKind's series.

Most of the Star Wars Series

The Harry Potter series

The R Feist series.

And all books related to Pern by Anne McCraffey.

Im a sick woman! hehe

That doesnt include my horror collection or mystery. For fun I went and bought Agatha Christie's Miss Marple collection. I love that old lady.

Try the Tad Williams 'Otherland' series. I really loved these books.

Best-selling fantasy author Tad Williams (Tailchaser's Song, the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series) begins a far-reaching cyberpunk saga with Renie Sulaweyo, a teacher in the South Africa of tomorrow, realizing something is wrong on the network. Some of the younger kids, including her brother Stephen, have logged into the net, but they can't get back out. The clues point to a mysterious golden city called Otherland, but everyone who tries to find out what's going on ends up dead. Settle in for a long, enjoyable ride, because this 770-page monster is just the first of four projected novels. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Honestly.. does this one move along better than his DragonBone book..

I read DragonBone chair(throne?) whatever.. God that Simon kid was driving me nuts. I wanted him to be killed off so he'd stop whining...

Then when I finally got to the good part the book ended.. That was years ago. I never picked up the next in the series.. Song, the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series..

Should I first finish that series? I mean was that first painful book just laying the background?

Honestly... if you've read them.. let me know.

Otherland looks promising...

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire...it's one of my all time favorite books. It's filled with everything - love, deceit, jealousy, murder, activism, fantasy - really well written and very tight story.

Have you read any Jean Rabe books. She is a fantasy writer my FH knows from way back. I'm snagging her books next off of his bookshelf...

Wicked is also on FH's bookshelf and on my to snag list I want to see the play now!!

Oh, I am ALL OVER the play right now. There are 4 of us who passed the book on to oneanother, who are going together. I cannot wait! Although, I am already disappointed in who they cast for Fiyero...he is just not how I pictured him from the descriptions in the book.

Wicked, IMHO, is a MUST read.

try reading the 'Left Behind ' series by Tim Lahaye.
My dad and FSIL who are big scifi fans swear by them. They have to do something with the end of the world.

hrmmm.. left behind.. that sounds interesting..

I think ill start there see what's what.

EVERYTHING here is going onto my wish list, must read..

Dune was on my list for so long before i Finally got to it.. so was 1984 and Stranger in a Strange Land.

both are good btw.

Re: Any Sci Fi/Fantasy Readers in here? I need a book idea..

ok..
whoa...

Left behind is a Christian Series of books talking about the end of the world in relation to a fictional 12 book series retelling of the book of relevations..

No offense.. but that sounds a bit heavy for an agnostic woman like myself who finds the bible a contridition of meanings and religion hardly tolerable.

I think I may have to preview this one in the bookstore.

I am open to new ideas (god knows I fell in love with Veggie Tales) but I always take Christian or religious things of preaching nature with a very cautious approach.

I'll tell you what I think.

(PS: Veggie Tales really do rock.. even for me.. I love the 'Saturday Fun, with Sunday Values' that they pull off.. SOOOO funny!!! - CGI animation of veggies ..haha)

Is it possible, Xelindrya? Have you not read Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time stuff?

Oh please!!
Dear friend of mine.. i have the PC game for WoT.
Ive read them all.. unfortunately

That man is such a loser. Im so disappointed in him I can't begin to explain. He's just cashing in on a story he has no edding to. Go read Goodkind. At least stuff happens!!!!!!!
BAH

You know that idiot of a writer came to Borders to autograph Winter night I think.. anyway.. He was a half hour late and left 15mins early. He was basically there for 15.. didn't speak to a soul and his publishers never sent out the signature cards they swore they would to all of us who wasted an hour there!!!!! Since that was the Borders in the Trade Center Im sure they'll say 'we lost the records'.. gimme a break.

James Patterson & Nora Roberts were both personable and at least spoke about their books before signing. When they did sign both were very generous.. although Patterson seemed a bit distant to say the least. That was when Roses are Red came out.. so I guess he had good cause heh.

Tons of stuff used to happen. Though I agree the last few books have been a clear effort to milk the series, milk it for all (more than?) it’s worth. I think he’s really started to alienate his fans.

Of course you've read Mists of Avalon. But have you read Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur or any of Chrétien de Troyes? Go right back to the original source with those, you do.

How about this Lord of the Rings series. You might like that?

I'll see if I can get my FMoD to post some suggestions.

Re: Any Sci Fi/Fantasy Readers in here? I need a book idea..

ok.. i'll bite.. what is FMoD??

Nope I haven't read those books but I'll add them to my list.. as for Tolkien.. I made sure I picked them all up and read them the month before the 1st movie came out.

I average about 700 pages in a week when Im interested in what im reading. So usually if a Sci-Fi movie comes out that has a book I run off and read it.

I'm not big into scifi, but I do read a lot of fantasy - I like Melanie Rawn quite a bit, as well as Kate Elliott's new(ish) series (Prince of Dogs is the first book). Try also To Say Nothing of the Dog and Doomsday Book, both by Connie Willis.

Hope this helps -
