Any SLP's on here?

Any SLP's on here?

Hey all! I'm getting my undergrad in Speech Path and I am STRESSED as hell about my midterm for my Language Disorders in Children class.
My professor is brilliant and I'm totally intimidated - doesn't help that she's the head of the graduate studies department, so she's the one to dazzle if I have any hopes of getting in....
I'm not having problems with etiology and other reasons for language disorders, I'm totally lost when it comes to assessment. We have mountains of journal articles and the textbook is dry as a bone.
How is it possible that something so interesting can be so BORING whenwritten about in a journal?!

I went through the same thing with child ed. I hate journals. The problem is no matter what you do you can't make them interesting. Quick question for you, I want to go for my masters in speech pathology can you recommend any schools in NY or on LI. I was going to so a post in here to see if any one knew where I could go for that and then I saw this post. I have a BS in child education and in psych but there are no teaching jobs open and I would love to be a speech pathologist. Any insight would be great. I have to stay in NY and I would love to be on the island if I could. Thanks...

Hey! I am in the same boat. I am a speech path major at LIU. I took lang disorders last semester. The assessment part (when they talk about tests and stuff) isn't the most facinating thing to read about. I hear ya. I feel the stress too. I am looking at Grad schools this year.

You probably have to take some prerequisites 1st. It's a really hard and competative field. Usual prereqs are: anatomy and physiology, speech path 1 & 2, audiology, speech science, lang disorders, artic disorders, lang aquisition, nueroanatomy, diagnostics, phonetics, and methods to name a few. Try finding a school w/ the program...if you need help, I can can tell you those on LI. Take the classes and then apply to grad school. You also need to obtain 25 hrs of observation for ASHA and now need physics. for more info, check out www.asha.org

Schools on LI/NY: CW POst, Hofstra, Queens, Adelphi, NYU, Hunter to name a few

WOW! I did SLP undergrad at Hofstra and you all are reminding me of all the studying, studying, studying I did! It was SO interesting to me. You're right though, most of the stuff if very dry and clinical. To make things more interesting, my friend and I would play drinking games with the material when studying for a big test. It worked though! Nothing but A's (we were lucky).

Good luck to all of you!

I'm an SLP! There are a few of us on here. I did both my master's and bachelor's at Hofstra. I love the field. The journals can make things dry especially if you don't have any 'real world' experiences to compare them to.

If you have any specific questions, ask away! Good luck to you ladies becoming SLPs!

Hey I saw that you went to Hofstra for your master's in SLP. I am thinking about going back to school to do the same. Can you give me any insight?

I am currently in a grad program for speech. This is my first semester. I love it (so far), but it's so much work! It's very hard to get into speech programs. What kind of questions do you have jellybean1420? I would be happy to help if I can.

Hey! Another SLP here! I did my undergrad at LIU and my masters at Hofstra. I can tell those looking for a grad program that Hofstra, at least when I went there, was very research oriented. That means Journals, Journals, Journals. If doing a lot of research turns your stomach I would look elsewhere for a program.

Re: Any SLP's on here?

As a fellow Hofstra grad. I can totally agree with the research base of the program but I do think that it is a great foundation for therapy. At least you do 3 externships, instead of 2 like other programs, to help you mix the theory/research with the application! Then again, it all depends on your externship sites! I'm supervising a Hofstra student this semester.
