Any tips on starting hypoallergenic formula (alimentum) with a 6 month old?
The doc's office finally told us to try alimentum to see if Matthew's fussiness finally goes away. I know it smells and supposedly tastes pretty bad. He refused it tonight but he was very upset after getting 3 shots. The doc said we could add 2 tbsp of prune juice to the bottle to help with the taste and his constipation. Do you think he will finally come to accept the new taste? I read somewhere that it could be too late to start something like this because he is so used to the other taste. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Good Luck. My baby is only 8 week so not sure if it is a good comparison but has been on the alimentum for about 2-3 weeks now. He adapted to it quickly. The first day he ate less than he did but now he is eating more because it is so light. He started 'snacking' so the dr said to up his formula amount by an ounce and that cut out the snacking. He does spit up more than he use to though..not sure if it is age or the formula but dr is not concerned. He is getting less fussy and is starting to sleep a little better...that took more than a week on the formula though. It seems now he only cries for normal things for the most part and is much more consolable when he does cry - not most of the day unconsolable crying like he was. Also his constipation cleared up in a day!!!!!!!! That made him a happier baby alone. He did have a couple loose bowel movements in the first week of trying it but that is gone now. He now goes 1-3 times a day where before I was lucky if he went every three days!!! And his infant acne cleared up - again not sure if it was coincidental due to his age or not but his skin is sooo much better since he is on the formula.

Thanks Niecey.... glad to hear your little one is doing better on it. Matthew refuses to drink it, we tried last night, this morning, and he will not take to it. I'm actually a bit annoyed that the doc's didn't suggest it earlier when he might have taken to it. Instead, they suggested lactose free, then soy, now this, months later. Instead of telling us to give him prune juice when he was little, I feel they should have listened to our complaints and realized this might have helped... maybe I'm overreacting, but now it just seems like it's too late. I don't know what else to do. I guess I'll try a couple more times but I don't think it's gonna work.

Can you mix it in little by little so the change is gradual?

It's funny because I was surprised my dr's office went straight to the alimentum. Everyone asks us why they did that. My office said that let's start with the best to see if it is digestive. Since he did well with it they kept him there.
