Any Vegetarians around??

I don't eat meat (chicken, pork, beef nor turkey) but do it seafood and drink milk, eat eggs and butter..

What do you ladies substitute for the protein besides seafood if you do eat this? Thankfully for my mom she makes beans almost everyday but I get bored after Wednesday comes around.

I'm not a full vegetarian. I was for about 5 yrs and was always sick. So I eat fish and on occasion chicken/turkey but not much at all.

I ate a lot of veggie burgers and soy products they are high in protein. They make everything from breakfast food to dessert. You have to try them out some aren't so good. Morning Star products are my favorite. I also LOVE beans which are a great source. Nuts is another one...soy nuts are my favorite. Let me know if you need more info...I have been doing this for a long time :)

All soy products like soy milk, soy beans (like edamame), tofu, seitan, tempeh, veggie burgers, nuts, seeds, lentils, other beans. Whole grains have lots of protein too (like millet, bulghar, barley, and quinoa). Of course, eggs, milk and yogurt if you eat them.

Most pro-vegan/vegetarian research shows that Americans eat TOO much protein (read 'Diet for a New America), and that we don't need as much as we tend to eat. That's why I'm confused about why the Atkins diet has proven to be effective.

I do eat veggie burgers and purchase the St Yves 'ham, turkey or bologna' from time to time. I also buy the wanna be ground beef that comes in a green bag in the frozen section. I can't remember the brand though.

Are any of you taken specific vitamins?

Since you eat seafood, you're getting omega-3 fatty acids from the fish, but they have these in supplement form too, for those that don't eat seafood (flax, borage, hempseed oils).

I think vegetarians have to make sure they get B vitamins and Iron which is possible in food form, but if you're not eating balanced, I would take a multi-vitamin supplement. Also, vegans have to eat enough dark leafy greens and they will get more calcium than in dairly products.

I am not a vegetarian, but peanut butter is a good protein source and stops you from beeing hungry

Thanks Nina. So informative

I was taking B-12 then I just stopped. I am now taking a multi vitamin for women. I might go back on the B-12 just to make sure.

I am also a quasi-vegetarian. I eat no meat, but I love seafood. I also have dairy.
I also love the Morningstar products that another poster mentioned. They have all kinds of soy burgers and nuggets. I add tofu to my vegetables and snack on trail mix. There is protein in nuts.

I love nuts and trail mix is a favorite snack so I guess I shouldn't be worried.
