any web geniuses out there?

any web geniuses out there?

I have a major spam problem. MAJOR. I only have one e-mail address - at work - where I get both personal and work e-mails. Now I have been not checking since Thanksgiving. I have 1,919 junk e-mails. I think that's ridiculous. The problem is that in there will be a few things I do want - things that come in from new clients say that aren't in my address book - so it's not as easy as just going to the junk mail filter and deleting them all. I have to scan through each day to make sure there is nothing in there I need. I dont' click on any of them and then I select all and delete.

Am I doing something wrong? I dont' belong to any chat board besides this one, and I really dont' shop much on line - I surf quite a bit, but VERY rarely do I enter my address or anything of the sort unless it's a reputable company that I am going to purchase from.

I am really sick of it- not to mention that more than 50% of them are really dirty disgusting websites. I have gone the route of going through each and removing myself from lists but not only does it take time - it doesnt' even work. Does anybody have any advice?

I Feel your pain. I get about 1500 messages PER DAY... not all of it spam, but about half of it is.

NEVER do a 'remove from list' Removing yourself from list's really isnt removing yourself. They use that method to verify that they are actually getting to a human being. They have each email tagged and when you click that link your email gets passed over, and then they know you actually get the message. Then your email address gets sent over to a premium list of email addresses that gets sold to people ... not the normal dictionary attack list that they will create (ie. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], and so on)

There is software you can buy and install on your computer to filter it.. or software that kinds of work on the saem premise as the spam... you would need to input a list of valid senders and only those get thru (they also allow for people in your situation where you never know where mail is coming from.. the sender needs to click a link saying that they are really a valid address.. kinda the same they do with spam :) If it's from a computer, (ie spam) it wont be able to click on the link and then get the message thru to you.

As a cheaper option, you could also get pretty creative with filters... ie. anything that has 'unsubscribe' or 'remove me' in the body is most likely spam. I would do filters like that and send it over to a 'spam' folder, that you can look thru every once in a while to see if something has accidentally filtered thru.

My company installed a spam filter on our mail server.. it's great. Doesnt grab everything, but it does get 90%

Good luck!

Download spybot to filter out spam or go thru roadrunner/optonline's spam filter programs.

Good Luck!
