Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
I had it at the end of my junior year in high school. The dr. said I got it because I had a mild case of chicken pox when I was an infant and then I was exposed to chicken pox again then. It was gross. I had it on the back of my neck, arm & tummy, but only on the right side of my body. I don't remember it being painful though.

Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
I had it when I was in grade school. My case was very mild and it was just a small patch that was itchy; I wasn't in pain or sick. My Mom had a case of it when she was in her 40's - she had it pretty bad and was in a lot of pain, no energy, and out of work for 2 weeks. I believe it is contagious until all of the scabs fall off.
You can get a lot of info about Shingles at WebMD.
Feel Better!!!

Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
Did they give you any anti-viral mediaction? My dad had it a few years ago. It was painful, but the medicine helped.
It is caused my the chicken pox virus that is already in your system.
It is contagious, you you would give someoen chicken pox, not shingles. I beelvie it only shows up on one a part of your body, b/c it attacks your nervous system or something like that. My dad had it on his neck.
Feel better!

Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
I had shingles a few years ago. It's very painful, but if you catch it early and treat it with antivirals and cream, it's much more manageable. it only shows up on one side of your body because what happens is when you have a virus like chicken pox, it stays in your body in your spinal fluid forever, and then if you have a time of weakened immunity it can come back again. When chicken pox 'come back' it comes back as shingles and it branches out form your spine, which is why it first appearson the torso, it will only show up on one side of your body, either right or left and it can spread up and down, but it won't spread past that median line.
If someone does come in contact with you they will get chicken pox, not shingles. you cannot 'catch' shingles. it comes from inside your own body. When I had shingles no one around me got sick at all, because they had all had chicken pox before. you only need to worry about people who haven't had chicken pox. It stinks and it'll get worse before it gets better. It gave me a LOT of pain and back pain, but really try to get a lot of rest, even if the rest of your body feels fine and keep up with the fluids, meds and vitamins to keep your immune system up.

Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
My mother had shingles around the time my nephew had been born. She was instructed to stay away from the baby. Make sure you stay away from small children whose immune systems may not be strong enough to fight this type of illness.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but I think the minimum time for recovery is 4 weeks, and you'll be contagious until it starts drying out and getting flakey. I missed 6 weeks of school my senior yr of HS.

Re: Anybody ever have Shingles?
I just FM'd you.
Depending on how bad it is it will be at least a week. I was out of work for a week with it (but i caught it early).
Tell your manager to stick it...you need to get better.
