my family and i want to go this year, but the last time we went was in the 80s and we can't really remember it. so i'm wondering if anyone's been alot that knows the best place to stand, time to show up etc. thanks for any tips!
This is from that website: Central Park West between 61st and 72nd Streets if it is a sunny day (it'll keep you warm). Or along Broadway from 57th to 49th Street if the weather isn't so nice (places to take cover). You should really get there by 7am (even 6am or earlier along Central Park West). Some people bring lawn chairs and basically camp out and have a great morning before the parade.

Re: anybody here a thanksgiving day parade expert?
We went every year of my life! It was a tradition but it looks like this year since I am cooking and also sick..we wont be able to go. We used to stand right on 34th street outside of macys but you have to get there VERY early!!!!!! And I mean like 6 in the morning and then keep in mind since that is the end of the parade route, the parade reaches you an hour later!
Last year we stood in the 70's somewhere and we got there much later. I would say around 8 30 and we saw almost everything. It gets extremely crowded though and most of the time is extremely COLD! Dress in layers and make sure you have gloves!
It is so much fun but sooo tiring..we always took a short nap when we came home but it was always the best times of our lives!!!!!!

We go every year, but I am VERY LUCKY, because my best friends father works in the building FACING Macy's. We literally get a room in the building with windows that open and look down on Herald Square and all the performances, bands, etc. We bring bagels, juice, etc... and have a party up there.
I would suggest getting down there very early. By 8am when we get down there, its already 4 -5 people deep.

I am not an expert but I will be watching from my office which literally looks over Herald Square
I agree - that area is insane even on a regular day. Get there EARLY like before daylight!

We used to go every year! It's harder to go now though... BUT It was our tradition to stand outside of the Ed Sullivan Theatre (David Letterman's theatre) On B'way & 53rd. We always got a great spot over there.
