I haven't waitressed in a few years, but there is otential to make sooooo much$$$$, you just need the right place. Right now, you want the places that are hot for the summer, Freeport, Riverbay (great $$$, terrible customers), and any other places near the water. You can make a couple extra grand in just the summer.
I loved waitressing and would consider going back a few days a week, but I already have no time. You are always moving, usually the people are nice, and it's CASH MONEY!!!!

Waitressed for about 14 years - -got me through college and enabled me to by a house by myself! Great money, but it is hard work. Physically straining, plus, people can be a$$es!
As curliegirl said, find the right summer spot - make sure it's someplace with a bar - that's when you can really make the money. If you could find a decent place and work a few shifts (including at least one weekend night), you should be able to clear a few hundred bucks a week!

Re: Anybody here waitress?
hmm...I am not sure this is for me...I work in collections now and the thought of dealing w/ more annoying customers might make me go off the deep end. I am so frustrated because I am trying to get something else. Looked in the help wanted section of Newsday and monster.com and could not find anything. Problem is, it has to be part time because of school. If it's what I have to do, then it's what I have to do though.

Re: Anybody here waitress?
I used to waitress YEARS ago and I hated it!
I worked at a few larger chains - one was macaroni grill -we often had 2 hour waits so that people were always annoyed by the time they finally got their tables so you had to work double to please them. The kitchen would be buried so food waits would be long too and people were often in a hurry to make movies, etc.
Honestly if you don't have a lot of experience or you are new they will give you mostly shifts few people want (at more popular restuarants).
Money can be good but it can be bad too - depends where you work, turn over of tables, price of checks, how busy...etc. Obviously nights are more preferable to lunch shifts and weekends are better than weekday evenings.
When you get good tables it is great - but rude people make the job MUCH harder and rather unpleasant.

I'm not sure where you live, but supermarkets look to hire people for the summer in all of their locations - especially out east.
I remember waldbaums always trying to get people - they would bus you out there, and I'm pretty sure they paid you the time you spent on the bus too.
Money isn't spectacular - but you get time and a half on Sundays/Holidays and once you're in the union you get a 4.00 bonus for the holidays - if you work it or not.
And I know I always made more than what my friends who worked at the mall made.

Re: Anybody here waitress?
i honestly loved it...it is just exhausting. hours can suck if you know everyone else is home. i hated it knowing that dh and family was home our going out and i was working until after 11. the customers can be horrible. but i have had awesome people tell me they never had a nicer waitress and leave me $20. i love the comraderie. the teamwork. but sometimes there is no teamwork and i did dislike being the only one running food, getting ice, getting dishes, etc. but the money can be great! cash...plus a wee check. it was a lot of work and i would go back and i think my restaurant is kind of expecting me, but it is also tiring.

Re: Anybody here waitress?
i waitressed when i was in high school and when i went home for summers after college- Made great $$$ but I walked out one day .my final day of waitressing, a customer who wanted something the way she wanted it, and the manager/owner-who was in the kitchen WHO REFUSED to give it to her...basically made me do his dirty work- and what she wanted was simple! i will never forget she wanted her pasta on the side-fish dish- and she wanted it BEFORE her meal came out
It was bad manager was yelling and it was an 'open rest' so customers could hear everything, I WALKED OUT- told him to SHOVE his job you know where
The customers WALKED OUT- NOT PAYING Offered me a job at their rest they owned- very nice, but i never called!
l didnt need people's SH*T
------------- therefore, if u need the money, it i s a great way to earn it, but i hated dealing with the rude people/managers

Re: Anybody here waitress?
I have waited tables for 9 years off and on. It is great money, short hours, and a great way to meet people. I love it that no matter what happens in life, DH and I will always be able to make due because we have serving experience. It is so easy to get a job as well. I have to work late at my current day job, so I had to lay off the serving shifts.

Yes I have done it and I absolutely loved it. Of course there are annoying people to deal w/ occasionally, and yes you really do bust you’re a$$ but you can make mad $, and like the others have said, its all CASH!!!! I am desperately trying to find something on the side right now, with the wedding and now the house I need some extra $$$$. I am having a hard time, it’s been a while since I have waitressed, but I have some decent experience. The problem is the 2 places that I went to so far require at least 2 weekDAY shifts and I can only do evenings and anytime on the weekends. So the search continues, but the $$$ is GREAT
