ANYONE A VEGAN...need some info.

I currently don't eat red meat, and hardly any poultry...but I really want to become a vegan, I've wanted to for many years, but haven't been able to find a good 'intro' book that will help me understand proper nutrition (my nutritionist keeps telling me not to do this...etc, but I really want to).

I work out a lot, and run...and I'm just afraid that switching to an all vegan diet will cause me to gain weight. I am totally wrong on this one?

If anyone has any good recommendations for literature or books please let me know, thanks.

I used to be a vegetarian for 6 years... for 9 months out of those 6 years I was vegan. It was TOUGH, let me tell you! I found myself cheating too often, like 'I'll just have one pancake even though they are made with eggs', so I decided I wasn't disciplined enough to be vegan. If you can be a successful vegan I would be very proud of you! A book that I can recommend is called 'Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating'. I forget who the author is, but if you do a search on Amazon you should find it. Let me know if you need any other suggestions, like places to shop, websites, and recipes (I love cooking! try www.vegweb.com). Even though I fell off the wagon, I still have the utmost respect for vegetarians and vegans. You'll only gain weight if you eat too much pasta (like I did!) Good luck!!!!

I'm a vegetarian - not vegan (unfortunately, I cannot part with cheese! )...PCRM is a great site to peruse. They have an abundance of information.

For some people it's easier to do something like this in stages - maybe if you went vegetarian first then vegan, it wouldn't be such a shock to your body.

I am vegetarian but my best friend is a vegan. She was a scientist at PCRM for a few years before she left to pursue her PhD. I can ask her fo some suggestions as well.

My cousin did it for a short while then went back to vegetarian. She is an attorney and she found it almost impossible to go to business meals or other events because she could never eat it because impossible to go to people's homes to eat. She would either have to ask her host to cook something special for her or she would have to bring her own meal. She found that almost everything in restaurants, and in prepared food violated the rules. So after 1 year she went back to being a vegetarian and finds it much better

I'm veg. and I get a lot of cookbooks etc. from PETA, they also have vegan cookbooks.

Here's a website with books for you:
http://www.peta.org/mall/books.html

Good luck! How is your FH about this? Mine still eats meat, and I even used to cook it for him (but only organic free range stuff since I'm in charge of the shopping). We've lived together 2 years and just a few weeks ago he asked me to stop cooking him meat at home...

Yay..another victory for the animals

P.S. Your body will be fine, as long as you are educated about what you're doing, which you obviously plan to be. .
