Anyone allergic to shellfish or know a lot about allergies . . .

If I am allergic to shellfish, does that mean I am also allergic to sea salt? I was watching that low carb chef on the food network one day and he mentioned that he does not use sea salt in his cooking because he has a shellfish allergy and both shellfish and sea salt have iodine in them that are the root of those allergies . . .

I am sure that I have had sea salt hundreds of times without even knowing, but now I know if am aware of it being in something I will eat it and will probably feel an allergic reaction based on paranoia, even if I am not really having an allergic reaction.

Sorry, I know I must sound like a head case . . .

DH is allergic to shellfish also. I just asked him and he never heard about being allergic to sea salt as well. I'm sure he's eaten sea salt too, but he's never had a reaction to it that we know of.

Not at all.

When people are allergic to shellfish it's an allergy to certain compounds specficially inshellfish. They're not even in other fish, and sometimes you're only allergic to SOME shellfish. For me, 90% of the time I can eat shrimp with no reaction, but sometimes I get a really bad reaction. I think it has to do with whether it's farm raised or free range of free range kind of shrimp.

Seas salt has nothing at all to do with eat. eat away!

ETA: I don't know what the chemical is specifically, if it is the iodine, etc. But whatever it is it's specific to the fish. Most table salt we use is iodized.

I'm allergic to shellfish. I'm allergic to the iodine. I don't use sea salt so I don't know about that. I use non iodine salt. Mostly you need to keep away from the iodine. Also check your vitamins.

can you eat calamari if you are allergic to shellfish? It's not shellfish, but DH is afraid to try it.

I don't think calamari is a shellfish, I think he would be fine- I have reactions to all fishes, so I don't eat any

I do too! I am alleregic to all fish/shellfish and no one ever believes me! But I can eat sea salt - and even seaweed.

Sorry to interrupt this post here, but this thread reminds me of something that happened at work the other day.

I was about to send a woman that was going for a CT scan, when I had asked her if she was allergic to shellfish. She told me then that she cant eat that because she has a bad reaction and cant breathe if she eats it!
I had asked her earlier if she had any allergies and she said no. I can only imagine what would have happened to this woman if I hadnt asked her. They cannot give IV dye to people who are allergic to shellfish or iodine, or it can kill them if the reaction is severe enough.

Please, anyone who has allergies to shellfish or iodine, please let your nurse or doctor know if you ever wind up in the hospital or visit a doctor. They often use IV dye for CT scans, especially if you ever wind up in the ER with abdominal pain.

Sorry again to interject in this thread, I just dont want anything bad to happen to anyone!
