Anyone been on the pill for a long time then stopped?
We want to get preggers on the HM, so I decided to stop the pill 4 months before. I was on the pill for the last 11 years, I don't know what my bodies 'normal' menstrual cycle is! I know when I was 14 it was about 30 days and my period lasted about 6 day and I had the worst cramps EVERR (which is why I went on the pill in the first place). Well, now it's been almost 34 days and still no period. We only had intercourse 2 times using the pull and pray method on what I thought would be my non-ovulating days. Sooooo, should I like take a pregnancy test or something??? Or wait a few more days? I'm thinking that tomorrow night at work if I have time I'll get a pregnancy test from the ER (I'm a nurse) and just do it - for peace of mind. Sorry for the long vent/ramble!
UPDATE: I took the test last night- NO PREGGO!!! Thank god :) FH would flip the fug out! THen happened to see my future OBGYN this morning and he said if you don't get it by July then start to worry. Seems like a long time, but whatevs! I'm just worried that when I do get my period it will comeback with a vengeance!!!

i went off the pill after 10 years (for medical reasons) and it took about 3 months for my cycles to normalize

I've heard many times that it takes a while for your period to come back after taking the pill for long time use. Anythings possible since the pull out method isn't birth control, but I really doubt it. Do the test for peace of mind.

When in doubt, TEST! That's my philosophy. Yea it may take a few mos to normalize, but u can still def get preggo. Lol LOVE that u said pull and pray, I say that to my patients all the time and they always laugh.

Its varies from person to person. Some girls on lif get preg sooner than others-i think a few even when on bc. I went off in nov 08 got preg in sep 10 they do sell ovulation test that could be helpful.

TWIN DATE! Hi .. Im having the same issue. We also want to get pregnant right away ... I went off the pill in Dec . I havent had a period since
I went to the dr. She wants to put me back on the pill because she said I should be getting a period at least 4 times /yr .. But I have always had issues with getting it so I cant fully commit to blaming the pill ... She said when we start actively trying that I'll go off the pill and she see what the next step is ...
Good luck!!!

Last time I went to the doctor for a regular check up and he found out I was getting married he started talking to me about getting pregnant. I told him all that I had heard about how long it could take to get pregnant after being on the pill for so long and he said it just vaires from person to person.
He also said that for most women, the first month after you stop taking your pill is your most fertile!! Don't know if that's true or not yet, but hope this helps!

I know this happens to quite a few girls. Your body gets so used to the pill that when you stop it... it can almost shut down.
Definitely talk to your doctor - they can give you some sort of med that will basically kickstart your cycle again and then it should normalize.

Your cycle is PROBABLY just abnormal. However, just for future reference, not every girl has a 'normal' 28 day cycle and ovulates on day 14--it's different for everyone! If you're nervous, just talk to your OBGYN :).

Re: Anyone been on the pill for a long time then stopped?
I was on the pill for 11 years and went off it in February of 2007. My period was never regular before and never got regular after.
My first 6 months off the pill, I got my period twice. The first time, I had to take something to kick-start it.
After those two times, I started to get it every 60 days or so.
Since then, it has been all over the place (I keep track in a calendar) -- some months 52 days, some 84, some 28, some 35.
The first two months this year, it was 32 days. So, after two years off the pill, I was finally on a more regular schedule. Every woman is very different.
If you don't want to get pregnant, I suggest something other than 'pull and pray' though... especially if your cycle is irregular.

i was on for 9 years and came off in march. i got my period after 33 days and the next cycle was 32 days. i have heard it may take a while for some girls to begin ovulating again since the pill tricks your body.
***the following may be TMI*** you can learn to read the signs of your body to know when you are ovulating so you can either skip sex or use condoms instead of just the 'pull and pray'. what is normally called 'discharge' is actually cervical mucus. when its getting white and creamy...you are approaching ovulation. if you see it get clear and have the consistancy of egg whites you are ovulating. PRAY HARD if you have sex on those days and you pulled out!

Re: Anyone been on the pill for a long time then stopped?
My OB/GYN told me not to stop the pill until I was ready to conceive, because even though yoy SHOULD be off the pill for 3 months before getting preggers, she told me you are the most fertile that month you stop and will probably get pregnant right away.
ETA: I have been on the pill for about 11 or 12 years. Went to get a sonogram last year or so to check to see why I was cramping mid/cycle and the DR laughing at me and told I was ovulating.
For the last 11 or 12 years, I have takenthe pill the same time every day, never missed a day and never had to double up or anything. She couldn't explain why but I still ovulate most months ON THE PILL. I think I am scared to stop....
