We have one to go to this weekend, and we're trying to figure out if open bar is the standard. I know it's not like this everywhere, so we're trying to be prepared. Thanks!

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
I went to one last year and they had an open bar. The couple who got married are big drinkers though.

I lived in Boston for a while. Typically it's open bar.

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
Half of my friends live in New England, and they always say that cash bar is more common. I'm sure around major cities like Boston it may be a little different, but a lot of my friends from up there are surprised when the girls down here have open-bar. I looked at a few places in CT that even pushed us to do cash bar!
A lot of them are also appalled at the amount of $$$ the NY/NJ/CT girls give for gifts. I think it's more typical to give gifts up there - and they spend much less.
Then again, it all depends on the people. One wedding I went to in NH was supposed to be cash bar, and the groom put his card down!

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
Open bar is NOT standard up in MA...my friend is having one, (I am in it in Oct.) and it is not open bar. I also went to another wedding in MA for another friend, again, not an open bar. Bring cash with you, it is not like down here at all.

Yes. The one we went to had open bar for cocktail hour and then it changed to cash bar...a few of us New Yorkers were tipping (others weren't) during open bar soo when it came time for cash bar we got our drinks free anyway

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
I was a BM in my friend's wedding in Boston in February and there was open bar for CH and then cash bar for the reception. I was kind of surprised because she kept talking about having an over-the-top wedding and was sparing no expense.
She was also shocked at how much $ FH and I gave her as a gift, and after hearing what some of the other BMs gave, I guess LI weddings are different!

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
We went to one last year and didn't have to pay for drinks (the guy was from New York).
FH thought there was some law against 'open bars' in Mass so he was watching very closely. The bartenders rang up each drink separately and the bride's father was presented a tab to pay at the end.

Re: Anyone been to a wedding in Mass?
I grew up in Mass. For weddings there, open bar is not included, so you have to pay extra for it. Some people do, and some people don't. The people who don't though sometimes will have open bar for the cocktail hour only. Oh and that's another thing...the cocktail hour. My mom helped plan my cousin's wedding and they had to decide how many to hors derves to allot to each person. I think it ended up being 7 per person (the ones being passed around; she also had a cheese table but no stations). Some poor people did not get their 7 because I know DH ate way more than 7! Sometimes they buy them by the hundred, but that still limits how many you can have per person. I was soooo happy to have my wedding in NY. My parents were blown away with the cocktail hour and the fact that ALL halls had open bar included.
