DH and I are going to South Africa in January and are thinking of stopping off in Amsterdam. What is it like? How's the food? What's good to see and do?

Re: Anyone been to Amsterdam, Netherlands
I only spent a couple days there but I loved it. It's a great city for walking around and there are a lot of historical and cultural things to do. It's also strange to see legal prostitution and marijuana sold in 'coffee bars'. Of course, there's shopping, restaurants and even casinos. I would definitely go back for another visit - it's very interesting.

Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijiksmuseum are the biggies. Canal cruise is a fun way to see the city. We also went to the Grasshopper- one floor is a restaurant, one floor is a bar and the third floor is a 'coffee shop' where you can get pot. From there it's also a short walk to the Red Light District, which is an interesting sight.

Re: Anyone been to Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dh and I were there for about 5 hours once. We were in London and he had to go to Amsterdam for a meeting. We didn't like it at all. We went on a canal cruise which was OK. But for the most part it just seemed really filthy. As for the food, Dh and I didn't think it was possible for the food to be worse than it was in London, but we were wrong, one meal in Amsterdam and we were wishing we were back in London. With that said, we really didn't get a chance to look around much. Like I said we were just there for about 5 hours, and right in the middle of the red light district!! Plus he was stuck walking around in a suit, and just didn't feel comfortable. We went to one 'coffee shop' called El Guapo that place was interesting. DH used to 'smoke' alot but I told him to be careful because it would be alot stronger here. Well he didn't listen and smoked to much which made him even more uncomfortable. At that point we just went to the airport until our flight left. Not to mention I was 5 months pregnant at the time, so I could not take part in the festivities. Everyone else I've spoken to loved it there, I just think we didn't have the time to look around or to see the nicer parts of the city. Plus I was pregnant he was in a suit and way to high. Someday we may give it another chance, but I'm not in any rush. But again like I said, everyone else I know loved it. So have fun
P.S. If you end up in the Red Light district definety check out the Sex Museum it's worth a look!!.

Re: Anyone been to Amsterdam, Netherlands
my FH has been to Amsterdam twice. he says go to any Indonesian Rice Table restaurant because it is phenomenal.
he also recommends the Rijks Museum, a great art museum and a canal tour, if it's not too cold. it's about an hour long.

Re: Anyone been to Amsterdam, Netherlands
There is an awesome Thai place called Bangok= best Thai we ever had.
I loved the food- everything was amazing- Don't pay for the dinner that comes with the canal cruise though- food was blah but do a cocktail one since the views are amazing.

There's also a square (can't remember the name of it) that is great to hang out at. It's like an open air food court - all the restaurants and bars are around the edges and there are dozens of tables in the middle. You get whatever food and drink you want and sit wherever you want, and there are street performers all over. It's a fun way to spend an evening.
