Anyone been to Barcelona?

I am going to Marbella, Spain in a few weeks for a business trip and I am going to make a weekend trip to Barcelona beforehand. Anyone been there? Any recommendations for restaurants? sites to see?

Yeah, it is great I third the above, also if you like architecture - check out Guadi's stuff - he is a funky architect. Are you only there one day, b/c MOntserrat is an amazing day trip.

I second the suggestion to see Gaudi's stuff - definitely go see La Sagrada Familia - that's Gaudi's church - it's really interesting and different looking. You can see his work throughout the city.

Re: Anyone been to Barcelona?

i went to barcelona for my HM, i can show you pics if you want.

Las ramblas is cool but after being there a few mins we left, it was like ok cool we saw it now lets go hahaha. This where they have the street performers so that was cool to see

We LOOOVED gothic square, the cathedral of barcelona was absolutely breathtaking. It was one of my favorite things that i saw. Plus around there, theres so much great shopping. You'll see like an alley way but its just full of shops, and alot of great stuff.

OUr hotel was on passe de gracia which the area was real nice. The buildings were so amazing and there was one that i loved so much, there was always a huge line though to go inside and we never wanted to wait so we didnt go inside haha but it was a block away from our hotel. Also definitely go to the market which is right by las ramblas.

Also DO NOT exchange money at one of those exchange places on the street, it was 1.90 to the euro, the banks offer the best exchange rate. Also if you get american express travelers checks at the airport when you exchange it its also the best rate plus you dont get charged a fee

We stayed at OMM hotel and the lounge there is great at night to go for drinks. THey also have MOO restaurant inside which is known as one of the top restaurants in barcelona. BUt most of the time we just ate at the outdoor cafes, prices are so reasonable and every single place we ate was amazing

here is a pic of street performers in las ramblas

here is the building i was talking about

if you see this place you HAVE to get something lol. Their coffees are awesome, crepes and ice cream

this was another cathedral by our hotel, familia one mentioned above

this was another amazing building on passe de gracia

this is cathedral de barcelona in barri gottic which i said above as gothic square. I have WAAAY too many pics of the inside but it was amazing

Re: Anyone been to Barcelona?

as far as where to eat, i only mentioned one place. Like i said there is moo which also got awards in barcelona, but there is also moo express which is the lounge area right before it.

On passe de gracia you will see one outdoor cafe next to another. We went to quite a few of them and all were great, you cant go wrong. The area is real nice too its known as the 5th ave or madison ave of barcelona, its where all the big designer stores are, very clean. We went to one place called baboo(sp?) either spelled exactly like that or babboo or whatever hahaha. Costa Gallega had awesome paella and their tapas was delicious too. ITs also on gracia and right on a corner. El glop is a local place.
The next block over from gracia which its annoying me now that i cant remember the ave, but it is so serene, and laid back and over there you'll find cafe's one next to another. The cafes are in the middle of the blocks and you have the streets to the side for cars with one lane. Plus theres alot of sculptures right there. Here is a pic to show you how its set up, just dont mine me in the pic i look like a doofus haha

also in barri gottic, RIGHT next to the cathedral there are a few outdoor places you cant miss it. The first one on that corner we ate at and LOVED it

we loved eating lunch here, the scenery was beautiful and nice laid back atmosphere

You're welcome, youre seriously gonna have the best time. Both dh and i have been on other vacations and even in our lives period without eachother and never have i wanted to move anywhere but we both seriously wanted to move to barcelona. It was so beautiful and youre going to love the lifestyle, everyone is laid back and enjoys life. I also heard SOOO much about the architecture but until i got there it was like WOW. The funny thing is that i also have so many other pics and ppl ask me what is it, and i just say oh its regular apartment buildings, even the regular buildings ppl live in and homes the architecture is the same way, i couldnt believe it.

OHHH and i forgot. Theres a crepes place RIGHT next to OMM hotel. It was sooo good. They have every type of crepe you can think of. I had a cheese and mushroom one then for dessert had the nutella mmmm lol

the best part is that spain is inexpensive even with the euro. It was cheaper than NYC i thought. Tapas dishes are typically 1.50 euro-3 euro. We would go to dinner and get about 5 tapas plates, lots of drinks, coffee and dessert after, bottles of water and it'd be like $30 euro. It was the drinks that even made it that much otherwise it would've been alot less

Barcelona is amazing! I LOVED Barri Gotic, I stayed at the Hotel Atlas, which was in a great location- a block from the Metro and in the heart of the Ramblas.

La Sagrada Familia is NOT to be missed, nor are the views from Parc Guell.

As soon as you get there, check out 'Travel Bar', it's a tapas/fish and chips place that has LOVELY outdoor seating in the back. It's own by a couple from the UK and they have daily outings for CHEAP. You meet at Travel Bar and go to flamenco shows...whatever is going on that day.

ICEBAR is also pretty cool, everything is made of ice- glasses/furniture...they give you a coat and mittens- great for photos.

Have a GREAT time and BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR WALLET on Las Ramblas....tons of pickpockets!

thats why i didnt like Las ramblas, it was the one sketchy area we were in. I was spotting them left and right too and watching those that would watch the tourists and try to get near them. Thats why i was like ok lets go. I walked with my bag in front of me and holding it tight, then one time i took money out, i stood up against a wall and had DH stand in front of me and make him watch anybody getting near me.

Re: Anyone been to Barcelona?

First of all, RUN to Barcelona if you can!! I LOVED it so much, I can't even tell you.

DEFINITELY see the Gaudi work. If you like architecture, or even if you don't, it is stunning. You will not be bored. You must see the Sagrada Familia. Also, included in the pics is the Casa Battlo. Check it out online. It is amazing.

HOWEVER, (and pardon me for getting all capsy, but I loved it so much), there is a building there that is simply the most amazing confection of a building I have ever seen. It is called the Palau de la Musica Catalana. Get tickets to see it IMMEDIATELY when you get to Barcelona, because chances are, they will be sold out for days. You may even want to try to book it before you get there. It's right in Barcelona, but for some reason, people don't hear about it. I was so into it, that I took the last tour spot remaining- and that tour was in Catalan Spanish, which I do not speak. It was almost funny until they almost kicked me out when I tried to take pics. Turned out the entire opening monologue the tour guide gave was about no pics. And there's the American moron taking out her camera.
And the security guy followed me for the rest of the tour!! It didn't make a difference, though, as it was the most over-the-top thing I have ever seen. There is a stained glass ceiling that you have to see to believe. You can't believe colors like that exist.

Funny side story- I was so into Barcelona, I got all photog and shot 15 rolls of the most amazing pics you will never see.

Why?

I loaded the film wrong.

Moron indeed.

Also, make sure to go to the Picasso museum.

There is a world famous restaurant there, I think it's between Madrid and Barcelona, and it's supposed to be one of the best in the world. It's called Il Bulli. They're big into gastronomy there and it's all about foams and stuff. I did't get to go, as they're closed for a few months a year, but try to go if you can. I hear it's an experience.

The outside market is called, I think, the Boqueria. Definitely go.

Finally, just walking around the city is worth it. You will see such amazing beauty- and most of it is buildings- either so old or so outrageous- either way, you will not believe it. I hope you go, and I hope to hear all about it!!

i know, mercedes and bmw's are as popular as honda is here lol, most drove bentleys, Rolls royce's, ferrari, lamborghini, aston martins. BUT one thing i noticed is that ALOT of ppl in monaco are actually italian. It was funny but dh and i kept saying how we feel like we're in Italy instead of France, but thats bc its so close for them but everyone around us was talking italian, even at our hotel everybody was italian. Plus everything we ate there was the best of anything we've ever had. Oh yeah i saw cruises stop there, we walked over the tunnel to where the yachts and other ships were and saw cruises coming in. We stayed on the other side of the tunnel, by where casino square was. The casinos were GORGEOUS i was upset i couldnt take pics inside bc they were like palaces. How many hours were you there, were you able to go to the casino's?

oh god dh gambled too and yeah lost quite some money, and we went 5 days straight so added up definitely should go back and get to spend more time there and see more, its such a beautiful place. For italy we're waiting to go with DH's parents, dh wants to go with his dad to visit the house his dad grew up in and the rest of the town, he wants to experience it with him so i understand that. The good thing is his aunt has a house on the water there and also just bought a house in rome so we wouldn't have to pay for hotel. We were originally gonna do monaco and italy but then he mentioned he wanted to wait so thats when we decided on spain.

No i didnt see it
