Anyone buy a home with a rental? curious as to what the pros & cons are

And it is a great thing to have the extra income with a baby on the way.

We actually are renting to family members so it makes the whole landlord/tenant thing a little easier. On the negative side - it is much more difficult to set boundries with family (especially when it is DH's family).

I would say it would be trying to find :
A: a clean person who you know wont cause mice or roaches...

B: Will they make payments on time, are they going to pay electric., if not are they going to be leaving lights on all the time (I am SOOO guilty of doing this to my poor landlord)

C: Who are you renting to? Will you come home and find all your stuff gone?

frank is so pro rental, i do not want the hassel.. you cant just kick someone out either, if they dont want to go, you have to get a court date and that could take MONTHS...

Of course the pro is the extra income.. if you dont need it dont bother...

Pros--extra money coming in every month
if it's someone you trust, you have someone to pick up your mail/ in your house while you're on vacation/let the pets out if any

Cons-only really depends if you have a sucky person living there.. for examp.. someone dirty, someone who doesn't pay rent.. that sort of thing..

Something to also think about is that all the laws are really on the renters side....
If you had a seedy charachter move in who wasn't paying the rent or destroying your property, it is VERY difficult to get them out. (Eviction is super difficult)

At least this is the case in NJ....
