Anyone doing this in place of getting a real passport?

driver's license passport

I think I might since I'll have to change my driver's license and passport once we're married so this may be a cost effective and one-stop-shopping way to do it.

Oh, just so you know, it doesn't work everywhere...just Canada, Carribean, and Mexico I think.

edited because I didnt fully read the whole website and I think is the link to look at.this

Thanks Gina. I'm just lazy and I'm scared at the idea of sending my birth certificate away plus I dont know if Mike knows where his is since he's adopted.

let me tell you.... we ran out to get our passports when the laws just changed and everyone and their mother was getting a passport... we sent away our bc's ... it took 4 months and numerous phone calls to get it all back... and got it all just 1-2 day before leaving for our cruise... that was some scary crap... now, people are getting them back much much faster so thats not an issue anymore...

as for mike, yes, id feel the same way you do in that situation... he can always attempt to get a new one but of course that depends on knowing his birth parents

Oh... just read its for land, sea, and domestic air travel .... no other air travel.... so basically the only way you're getting to the caribbean with this is on a cruise ship.... thats kinda sucky LOL

yeah DH and I went to the DMV the other day to change my name and he asked about this license and the man told him it's really not worth it. It's only good if you drive to Canada a lot, otherwise it's better to just use your passport. You can't use it to fly, so IMO I'll use my passport.

I was worried about sending out my BC to but it went well, I got my passport 4 weeks after i mailed it in and my Bc came back 2 days after my Passport got to me. So you should be ok.

I saw this today but since I'll definitely need it for air travel I just got the standard one, and I'm vomiting over the birth certificate thing. Bah.

No because my passport is still relatively new and I had just gotten my old DL renewed a few months ago..

It's not really worth it unless you're driving to Canada or Mexico a lot.

My dad (he's a special agent with immigration and customs) told me to continue to use my current passport till it expires so I don't have to pay the $90 fee again. I have another 2 or 3 years to go until it expires. He said the only thing I have to do is make sure that for any trips FH and I take once we're married, to book my travel in the same name as my passport.

He explained this is not illegal to do - just because you change your name on your marriage license, you still have all legal rights to use your maiden name as long as there is no intent to defraud.

I won't do the official name change until we get back, and we leave the day after the wedding. I would recommend a real passport.

This is such good information! Does it matter that air lines want your driver's license name to match your passport?

If you are showing your passport as ID - the airlines don't need to see your drivers license at all - after all how do they even know you have a drivers license?

As long as you are ticketed as Jane Smith and your passport says Jane Smith - it doesn't matter if your married name is Jane Jones. You just have to make sure your travel documents are issued in the same name as your passport. This is why whenever you book a trip to Europe they ask you to fax a copy of your passport. Just make sure that your hotel reservations also indicate the same name as your passport - in some hotels in Europe you have to show your passport when you check in.

In addition, as mentioned in a previous post, if you change the name on your passport within a year of it being issued, you don't have to pay a fee.
