I wanted to know who has or who is dress shopping before they lose 20-30lbs. (I have over a year). I wanted to know if I should look and get an idea of what I want, or if I should wait (at least until Sept/Oct.) when I've lost some of the weight.
What have you guys done, what do you think?

Re: Anyone dress shopping before they
I recently went through this same problem. I went to Burtons to try on gowns, which I wasnt thrilled about because I have 30-40lbs to lose(I have plenty of time now)but they assured me that if need be they would rebuild the dress. Well very kindly the salesgirl ignored all the pics I brought and showed me gowns she thought someone my size would look good in. I didnt see not one gown I asked to and she even said to me that for my size A line dresses looked better Also, all the sample gowns you try on are in sizes 8-12 and being a 16-18 right now this was horrible because they didnt even come close to closing so how do you picture yourself in a gown that doesnt fit you right. I left almost in tears and swore I wouldnt look for my gown again until I dropped some weight. So my suggestion is if you have plenty of time wait until your comfortable with how you look. JMO

That's going to be hard to do in 4 months, you could probably lose 30, but it depends on how motivated you are. Good Luck

I would wait- I only need to lose about 7-8 lbs and firm up ALOT but I am waiting because I know I want to feel my best! Plus you do have plenty of time!

Re: Anyone dress shopping before they
I hear you loud and clear! It was so bad b/c some of the dresses I liked were sampled in size 4. ugh! I am now down to a 10- 12 but when I started to look I was a tight 14 and pushing 16. I thought that I would loose a lot of weight and then go looking. I didn't loose anything. But since purchasing my dress, I have lost weight.
It is hard to find dresses, but if you have hips that are larger than you top no matter what size you are the a-line will prob look better on you. There are a couple of things that I found out along the way when I was dress shopping that might help if you have large hips like me
look for dropped waist dresses look for natural waist dresses look for a line dresses look for empire dresses (if you have a belly)
stay away from dresses that have that little piping design between the corset top and the skirt stay away from column dresses stay away from mermaid dresses stay away from box pleat skirt dresses some times the more fabric/petticoats the worse. try to see if they can remove a layer to two so that it will stay flatter.
as for the top of the dress, if you are comfortable with wore arms you can wear strapless look for v-neck necklines look for sweetheart necklines look for straight across necklines look for boat neck necklines
stay away from halter (even though it is in fashion) or key hole backs - if you are larger chested IMHO they are difficult styles to wear b/c of the lack of support for the front side good luck!

I wanted to wait before I lost weight because you get a better idea of what the dress will look like on you BUT I went in February anyway and it was fine...since then I have lost 10 lbs

I say wait!! Not only do you have the time, you will have so many more options available to you that you will like or even consider on yourself if you wait until you are feeling a little better about yourself. I didn't have time so I had to try on gowns when I was still heavy and I had the hardest time because I didn't like ANYTHING on me. Also, you rule things that you wouldn't after you lose the weight. But I ended up losing 30lbs before the wedding and sometimes I still wonder if I would have chosen a different gown if I wasn't heavy when I shopped. So I say wait.

Re: Anyone dress shopping before they
I didn't wait but Im planning on losing about 15 pounds. Just the extra flab on my tummy..so I don't think waiting would have made much a difference. The dress should just fit a little better.

i am plus sized and in the process of loing weight and i went to Kleinfelds and they were amazing and so patient i ended up with a stephen yearick gown and his are made to your exact measurements most dresses they order in the size closest to your measurements if you look now you could order something remember they can make anything smaller they just can't make a dress bigger,
