I invited a lot of people from work to my wedding. One of my co-workers & I were talking and she told me the reason I haven't gotten any RSVP's back from anyone there is because they do want to come but don't know if they can give a gift that would 'cover them'.
Anyone else getting NO's or no answer fofr this reason? I worried when planning the wedding the economy might effect if people came or not, now it's sorta coming to light. As much as I'd like some of these people there I understand if they can't make it. We're all in the same boat at the job struggling and have not had a raise in 2 years.

Re: anyone else finding this?
i didn't invite anyone from work....so i wouldn't know...but i do know that the economy is bad, and that most people don't have much to spare. Weddings, even on their ends...can get expensive...dress/suit/hair/gift...etc. etc.

No...not really...unless your wedding is super fancy and they are afraid their gift won't live up to the PP price?
We both invited a good amount of ppl from work and a lot of people are making the trip from Upstate to NYC for the wedding. But a lot of the people are people we are friendly with outside of work as well.

Re: anyone else finding this?
FH and I have 2 weddings this summer that I am just going to because we can't give a big enough gift right now. So if I just go it is half the cost.
It is horrible but I told both brides he had to work and that is the reason he can't come not that I can't afford your envelope.

I have heard that from a couple of people but I suspect that is the case for a few more. Times are very tough for people right now and they just can't afford an expensive night out. That's why I tried to keep my wedding relatively small.

Re: anyone else finding this?
I am only having 1 person from my office who I am close to as we socialize outside the office... I know people are having a tough time and am not surprised at having to pick and choose to attend stuff carefully... My office normally has a party with a cake for the person...sometimes a collection. I had that the last time I got married (I am widowed) so I don't expect anything this time except good wishes... I had a few people ask if they were invited, and I just said I was keeping it to family and close friends due to the small venue. (which is true for me..)

I had a friend say this to me to which I replied don't be silly and come without a gift! I just wanted her there to celebrate with us, we didn't care about a gift at all! That's what I would tell them!

Re: anyone else finding this?
I have alot of people coming from Ireland and i already told everyone that we do not want gifts. We just want them here. I know they will give gifts anyway but for me and FH it is more important that our family and friends are here to celebrate with us than making money. If they are important to you and you really want them there then tell them not to worry about gifts as the day is expensive enough on people as it is.

Re: anyone else finding this?
arrgggh I wrote a long a$$ response and it kicked me out
Basically I said that FH and I had to decline a wedding this summer because in the end we couldn't afford to go. It was out of state which would mean travel, hotel, dog boarding, plus gift. We sent a check instead which is a fraction of what we would've had to spend.
It was a tough decision and I even cried since I felt bad but with renovations and RH payments, it wasn't feasible and I had to admit it.
So I can see how some people may feel uncomfortable - like they are freeloading or something if they go and don't give 'enough' money.
But I purposely kept my guest list small because I truly want to invite only the poeple I want there so I hope nobody declines because of financial reasons.

The economy is making it hard for people to do the things they used to. So I see how it can be an extra expense to got to a wedding of someone you are not that close to like a coworker. The sitters, the hair, the gift it all adds up.

Re: anyone else finding this?
We got some people who didnt come to the wedding because their financial situation had them unable to afford a gift. we kept telling htem the real gift would be them being there with us, but they still refused to attend
