to help to pay for the gifts for the first?? let me explain, see i work for a large company, in a dept that has about 40 people. it feels like every day, an envelope is going around for this one's baby shower/retirement/new house/lost a tooth etc. i literally came into work this morning with $30, thinking it would last me a few days, i didn't buy lunch or dinner, and i now have only $15 in my wallet. i don't mind, but it is getting a little ridiculous. i feel like i need a second job to cover all the 'events' happening here. anyone else?

Re: anyone else need a second job....
is there a way maybe to limit the amount put in or limit the activites or even passing on them telling people it is getting out of hand?

its kind of hard because there are soo many people here, and everyone wants what the other had. but there are 4 weddings coming up here between may and august. that means 4 envelopes going around. there is not one person 'in charge,' its more like certain people decide to do something for another. know what i mean?

A lot of companies have a sunshine fund - I know at my mom's job people are asked at the beginning of the school year if they want to contribute to the fund and I also think there's a little in her school's budget (nursery) to contribute. When all these events happen - people are given $$$ through the sunshine fund not hitting up individual people for $$ all the time. Maybe you could talk to your bosses about the difficulties of always contributing and asking if something like this could be set up.

Ours too. The sunshine commitee gives just a little something, we throw showers and parties for everyone. It gets costly after a while.

just to calify, i realy don't mind contributing, but somedays i feel like all i'm doing is signing a card and putting a few dollars in an envelope. maybe we can look into the idea of a sunshine fund. thanks!

I used to work in a place like that (same setting/large department). It was madness. Literally every day you were being hit up for cash. Meanwhile when I left, I got SQUAT This one biotch expected everyone to kick in $30.00 a piece for this one chicks office bridal shower because she 'bought' a $300.00 wedding cake for the shower. Are you kidding?!? After awhile, I stopped giving and I used to get the 'look' because I wasn't a team player. I too was on a fixed budget and was walking away with NOTHING at the end of the week.
