Re: Anyone ever been to Venice?
As far as location goes in Venice - EVERYTHING is close. It is much smaller than you think. You can get from one side to the other in about a 20 minute walk. And wandering around and getting lost is the best part! I think the best area to stay in tourist-wise is San Marco. We stayed at Hotel Al Codega and loved it (for 3 days prior to our cruise). We also stayed at Hotel Belle Epoque (which is across right across from Principe) and was not impressed. Principe might be better because it will be easiest to get there! Keep in mind there are no cars in Venice and all the streets are cobble stone (not fun to drag luggage across!). When in Venice you MUST: take the vaporetto to Burano and Murano (must must must do this!!!), and have café in Florian (at Piazza San Marco) - just because it's so old and rich!!! DO NOT eat at anything called a cafeteria or self service - it's over priced reheated food. In the San Marco area- get drinks at Caffé Torino at Piazza San Luca (double sized shots for a not too bad price) and gelato at this place by where Calle del Fabbri and Calle Fiubera meet.

Totally agree... you can walk to most of the different areas in no time... virtually everything is centrally located.

And that reminds me - most of the hotels are very old and very small. It is what it is.

Re: Anyone ever been to Venice?
Venice is awesome. I was just there this summer and I stayed in Hotel Locanda Ovidius it was right on the Grand Canal! It was a 3 star hotel and perfect for the two days FH and I stayed there. .It was so pretty there, but I agree that everything is close.
