we are...

in a sellers market it's hard to do otherwise, as long as you know what you are getting yourself into, everything is manageable - it's when you get caught off guard that it becomes quite the *****.

we are buying a house that has water issues that we will fix over time. we estimate 10-15K will have to be allocated to that alone, something that in the end we were willing to undertake.

Our house is being sold 'as is' also.....aka a handyman's haven!!!! We have some work to do, but its a great price in a great town, and liveable with some minor things right away.

Good Luck!

When my bid was accepted - my house was to be sold as is. Although my house was not a fixer upper - it was in very good condition and most of the things that needed fixing we were already aware of. Anyway, per inspection we realized the CO was missing and a few small things. We had them get the CO and do the small fixing things before we signed a contract - so much for as is. Although the inspector missed some bigger items we had to repair/upgrade down the road.

There is nothing wrong with buying a house as-is as long as you are working with a very good inspector that will detail out all the issues you may have to deal with.

Sometimes accepting the house 'as-is' is the only way to win a bid on a hot house.

When you buy a house 'as is' do you need to get an engineer in before you sign the contracts? I would think so, but just not sure.

Absolutely, otherwise you wouldn't know if there were any major structural problems and you'd be stuck with them. If you don't like anything the engineer's report comes back with you don't buy the house, especially if it is sold 'as is'.
