Re: anyone ever buy a star??
FH got one for me when we were first dating. To be honest, it was sweet, yes- but kind of useless. One of my BM's bought us an acre of rain forrest as an engagement gift, and it was really just a donation tot he charity. Now we get tons of mailers asking for more donations, wasting paper... Ironic.

DH bought me one three yearso ago...from Star Registry. It's a sentimental gift more than anything. The frame hangs in our livingroom.

Re: anyone ever buy a star??
i have a start named after me. It came with 2 big framed pics. One of the certificate and one of the map where I can find my star. I love it!!!!!! It's from the International Star registry. it comes with a booklet of how to find the star!

Its really just a cute thing to do but really that's it, I dont think there is anything really legit to it.

Re: anyone ever buy a star??
Nope....you can not own a star, my astrology teacher in college said its the biggest scam. You can pick a star yourself & name it. I guess the idea of it is kind of cute but I wouldn't spend too much money.

The above poster is right. It is a scam. The 'international star registry' has no authority over anything. You would get more value from designing a certificate on word yourself, framing it, and including a star map with a randomly circled one that says 'this one is yours.' That way, you'll still get the sentiment across without wasting your money.

Re: anyone ever buy a star??
I think it is in the Signals Catalog, but you can get a shot of a picture of the night sky over any location, and then have a message attached to it. I think that might be a nice alternative to buying a star.
DH bought me one from the International Star Registry when we were in college... a few weeks later there was a whole tv report on how it was the hugest scam and no one can buy or name a star!

Re: anyone ever buy a star??
Sorry, but its true. My DH is an astronomer. Stars are named using a system of letters and numbers. I don't remember what the system is, but DH explained it to me once.
Is there another star-related gift you could give her? Is she into astronomy?
