Anyone Ever go to Dominican Republic

Anyone Ever go to Dominican Republic

Do you need a passport for entry into the DR? I know it's strongly recommended, but I read you can get in with a birth certificate and ID. I just want to make sure that's correct.

I used a Passport

If you have one, I would bring it. It will make customs, security, etc.. so much easier.

I went a few years ago (b4 they required passports to go to the Carribean Islands). Didn't have a passport so I brought my Birth Certificate and they stamped my Birth Certificate!! That totally *****... LOL! Now my original BC has a Dominican Republic stamp on it. I got my passport last year. Totally worth it b/c it's always a good ID to have on you too.

New law, as of 1/23/07 all U.S. citizens need passports when traveling to anywhere in the Caribean need valid passports (except Puerto Rico of course). Later this year the rule will apply to sea and land crossings as well (for Canada, Mexico, Caribean, etc.).

This is some special allowance if you have applied for but not recieved your passport (probably b/c the wait times have gotten so bad with all the new applications). More info here:

you need one. i went 2 yrs ago w/ my ex--i came back and was in the hospital back and forth for a month. my ex was really sick too. my recommendation is to really be careful where you are eating. we left the resort and ate the best food we had on the entire trip--like homecooking. we paid for it though b/c that was on day 3 of a weeklong vacay. have a blast. we also went to puerto plata not punta cana. its a fun place though so just be careful not brave like us.

Yes get a passport. My aunt went and they wouldn't let her on the plane without one even though it was said she didn't need one.

Check this out! You only need a tourist card to enter the DR, which you buy for $10 when you get there. And now that you don't need the actual passport to enter and exit the US, but just proof of application and an ID, I don't have to pay for expedited service!! Woohooo!

I was told by my travel agent that DH and I were going to need our passports for our October DR trip. I needed to renew anyways because I never changed my name.
I didn't know that I could just bring proof of the application and get a travel card. That seems a heck of a lot easier!

Well, technically you do need your passports. Today they changed the regulations so anyone traveling through September 30th can travel with only proof of applying for the passport and an ID. for an October trip you'll need your passport. Lucky for me, FH and I come back from our HM ON September 30th! You also have to buy a tourist card there for $10 each.
