Anyone ever had

an Endoscopy? I have to go for a consult tomorrow and then schedule to have the actual procedure done... and I'm freaking a little.

That's where they go down your throat, right? If so my dad is going for one today and I had one about a year ago. There really wasn't anything to worry about - it really was no problem for me.

I had something caught in my throat (I had no clue) and couldn't eat and had huge pains in my chest so mine was an emergency procedure. They knocked me out and did their thing and I woke up dazed but never felt anything. (Wound up I had taken medication a night or two before and I didn't take it with water so it got stuck in my esophagus and it burned a hole in it. It was painful but the test was not. I had to drink liquids and take some medications until it all healed.) You are supposed to bring someone with you because of the anesthesia but I didn't because it was an emergency - they didn't want me to leave for awhile but I snuck out when they weren't looking and walked home (wasn't driving) - I only lived 4 blocks away. I probably should not have left on my own - because I barely remember the walk home - I was so out of it. I just remember coming out of the anesthesia - after I got home - I went thru a bunch of emotions - I got really sad - not sure why - it was all the drugs talking!

I was supposed to get one as well, but I chickened out (I have total doctor phobia). I know other people who have had it done and say it's not a big deal, though. You are given anesthesia, but you're still awake. You have to be conscious enough to swallow the tube... it sounds awful, but again I heard you're so drugged up you don't feel anything. It's not supposed to take very long, either. The only thing I heard was that your throat feels sore for the next day or so, like you have a little sore throat.... nothing major. And you definitely have to have someone there to drive you home. I'm sure you'll be fine!

I had one a few months ago. I started having crazy chest pains (which turned out to be an acid problem) and the dr. said i should get one.

The one suggestion i have is to get knocked out! I am peterified of anesthesia (sp?) so i only let the dr. spray my throat and was completely awake. it was HORRIBLE. the wierdest feeling ever. it didn't 'hurt,' it was just a really unnerving experience.

Thanks girls.. I'm super nervous about it! Just thinking about it makes me gag!
I have to get one done because my Dr. thinks I have an ulcer and I have G.E.R.D. which is a form of recurring acid reflux and my Dr. said w/my age (25) he's worried that I may have damaged the lining to my esophagus - which if left untreated can be unfixable. I'll let you know how it goes! I hope they knock me the heck out for it.

I had one for the exact same reason you are. They put me in what they call twilight sleep. All I remember was them spraying my throat and the next thing I was in recovery. It really was not too bad

My sister's husband gets one of these yearly. He has terrible GERD and has damage to his esophagus. So they have to monitor it.

I type up medical reports, and in most cases they give the patient intravenous sedation, which basically means they give you a shot of a sedative. Most people go to sleep with it, but it's not as 'deep' as anesthesia. Even so, you won't feel anything as far as I've heard.

Yikes to the poster who took the pill without water! Was it an Advil or Motrin?? A friend of mine took Advil without water and the same thing happened to him. He burned his esophagus!!! OMG! Always drink plenty of water when you take a pill!!!!
