Anyone ever heard of this? Done this? or know someone who has?

Telling a hall that it's a family reunion rather than a wedding?

A coworker said she had about 225 guests at her Baltimore wedding for $15K total. This does not include the band - but her dad paid for that.

A family member booked the hall for her and she later found out that she got a 'banquet' price rather than a 'wedding' price. It would have been at least 25% more for the 'wedding price'.

I ask because a friend called and suggested Tribeca Rooftop for our wedding since she attended a function there this week. She said it was fabulous and there is no way they paid over $100 per person. I suspect she's correct since it was not a wedding but a 4 hour banquet with entertainment.

I guess this is what's commonly referred to as the 'wedding tax' and it's totally unfair

ETA - I am not planning to do this but do wonder why there is a premium placed on a wedding reception versus any other banquet at the same hall with the same menu I know I attended a great reception at Cipriani's a few months ago and it was not outrageously expensive but a bride on one of those Bridezilla shows paid a ton for her Cipriani wedding (and she worked there I think).

Yes, I have heard of this. It annoys the heck out of me.

For certain things, I am not telling them it is a wedding.

The Cupcake Cake - I am just having a bakery make the cupcakes and my hall will arrange them on tiers. I am convinced I will be charged so much more if they know it is cupcakes for a wedding cake.

The Limos - I just need one to take the girls to the ceremony/reception site. They don't have to know either. At least I don't think they do....

I have thought of this too, for other vendors (not the hall). But I am so afraid that the day of the wedding, they refuse to service us, EX: limo arrives, sees it's a wedding then insists on charging the 'wedding' price or not driving! YIKES! I wouldn't want that unruley stress. I am hoping to get a LITTLE bit of a break price wise b/c our wedding is on a Thursday!

That would scare me too. I bet the deals are amazing but what if a vendors decides not to follow through.

I can't recall what the Baltimore bride did but I know she said her limo guy did not know it was a wedding either.

as soon as the word wedding is used, there goes the $$ out the window! It is such a premium, but regardless of your unction, there will be a service fee of about 18%.

It's worth a try....test it out on a hall you lik, but you know you won't consider and see what their prices are for say a family reunion. Then have someone else call and request pricing for the same # of guests as a wedding. Let us know what happens

I could never get up the nerve to do it. I'd be to scared that vendors would back out on us.

I'm just amazed that it worked for a couple of people with no drama. The halls would gladly take the business but the word 'wedding' seems to increase the prices at least 25% for everything - especially dresses. Even white fabric costs way more than any other color.....just because they know it would be used for a wedding gown I suppose.

I saw one limo company web site that listed 5 hours for a limo for one price, and a wedding package for 5 hours was nearly $1000 more -- and the only difference I could see was that they provided an aisle runner! I am tempted to go in and ask for a regular limo, and then mention its for a wedding, and ask them to justify the price difference...

$1,000 difference That is EXACTLY the crap I'm talking about. Why are the prices 25% - 200% more if anyone mentions the word 'wedding'?
