Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

I was wondering how it is there. My DH is thinking of buying a condo in that area. I know nothing at all about SI. I only know LI.
It seems more affordable than where we are now. I would love your opinion on it as far as neighborhood, schools, shopping etc.
TIA

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

Well it is a very small island. Everyone knows everyone. The schools just depend on your neighboorhood, many people chose catholic school. where do you work? DH and I both commute to the city. the express bus is going up to 5.00 each way, I work downtown, so it is usually an hour ride home for me. Ferry takes 1 and 1/2. We lived in a great neighboorhood. Rossville is nice, so is annadale. both are a little more spread out than were I live. Both areas are mainly made up of Italians, so very much families living close by to one another. Many 2 family homes around there as well, so if you buy a spot with a driveway that is very much a benefit. That side of the island is the south shore, it is be built up fast. Many things(stores and restaurants are fairly new) I believe a new grammer school just went up. one thing to check for is that the city is making everyone over there switch to city water and sewers, that is costing homeowners a lot. it needs to be done within the next year. that would be a good question to ask your realtor. I love Staten Island, it is very friendly, but too expensive for DH and I. DH hates the commute as well. The bus schedules are iffy, and sometimes we hit traffic, that we can avoid on the ferry. HTH

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

DH used to live in Grassmere. It was nice there....

I just hated the traffic. Especially the Belt Pkway.

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

yeah traffic does not move on staten island. it really just depends on the time of day. I am a walker, I walk to grocery store, cleaners, restaurants, blockbuster, library, church everywhere. you name it , it is in walking distance of me. I am in grant city, near new dorp

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

I am from Staten Island - Great Kills to be exact. My sister lives in Annadale. It's a nice area. The schools in that area are pretty good.

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

I live in Annadale, I'm originally from Brooklyn. We're here about 3 years. I really like this area. It's easy to get to the highway and close to express buses.

ETA: Where is the condo?

Re: Anyone From Staten Island?

Thanks for all the info eveyone. I don't know SI so I couldn't tell you where the condo is, I just know it's Rossville. Friends just bought one in the complex & they would love for us to move there. It's 3BR & basement. They like it but I guess I needed other opinions. I have only been there a handfull of times, not enough to actually make a judgement.
DH would be the one to commute & he would have to go into Maspeth.
