Anyone get their hair straightened?

Where and how much does it cost?

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

Jen I've thought about it but I've seen too much fried hair to think it's worth it. My boss spent $700 on the Japanese thing and I thought her hair looked like hell.

And there is a girl on my bus who had hers straightened and it looks all flat and gray and dull and unhealthy. Don't do it! get blowouts instead!

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

I have honestly considered it...esp with the summer coming. It is too hot and such a pain to dry it everyday...lots of work. But my hair is so thin that I am afraid it will become to lifeless. Also, I don't know if I can be bothered with going in for touch ups every 3 months or whatever it is.

I know someone who did (she is one tv - news reporter) and it came great. She got it done in the city somewhere. My friend and I were just discussing it the other day. She said she located a really good and expensive place. Let me see if I can get that info from her.

One of my MOH's has had hers done at least twice - maybe three times. And I think it looks AWESOME (this is that Japanese technique, I think it cost her around $3-400 in the city). The first time she didn't like it - she thought it looked too flat, but I loved it.
As far as regular straightening - I don't know anyone who's had good luck with that. My one friend said it didn't really get out all the curl and it just made her hair feel awful.

you can get it done on Jamaica Avenue for like 150 bucks and it's just as good.. only the shee shee places will charge you that much..

it's called thermal reconditioning..

My friend just recommended Pilatos. It's on Northern Blvd in Queens I believe. Sorry, I thought it was in the city.

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

A friend of mine had it done for about $400 in the city. It looks amazing. She had really curly, thick hair. Now her hair is so soft and smooth. It's a totally different texture I never would have thought possible for her. But, after about a month she started complaining about the roots. I still think it looks good though.

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

I have been getting my hair straightened for about ten years...way before the Thermal Rec. came out. My hair before was kinky curly, thick and always a frizz ball...now it is thick and straight. I do have to cut the ends frequently but no one ever believes me that i have curly hair. You really would never know. I still have to blow it out but it only takes about 20 minutes. I have not ventured out to the Thermal Rec. for one cause of the price and two I heard it makes your hair limp with no body. I have also heard many people have had breakage problems.

As far as salons for the straightening...I go to Christies and Co. in Bay Terrace. I have a girl I love there and the cost is approx $200 and I get it done 2-3 times a year.

Use caution when using the salons who do the Thermal Rec. for cheaper. Be sure to ask how long they have done it and how many customers then have done. You dont want a newbe experimenting with you. The salon I go to also do the Thermal Rec. but its lots of $$ 800

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

Chloegrl can you let me know who you got to and the number of the place if you have it. What is what you have done called?

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

My sister used to get the regular straightening done and I don't think they even compare. (Just my personal opinion.)

I had my hair straightened ONCE (not TR) and I would never have that process done again. The TR I would consider based on seeing the outcome first-hand.

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

I go to Maximus in Merrick, but my hair is still curly, I have loose curls (I look like Diana Ross on a bad day without getting this done!) It is 'relaxed.' I've been getting it done for about 10 years now. I don't blow it straight either, but for me it's made a HUGE difference and I don't know what took me so long to do it. I have family that swears by this place called Ollies (I think it is in Queens) for straight hair. I don't think they cut, just straighten. Let me know if you have any questions!

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

I had it done once years ago ( do not remember where) I liked the results, but it wore off after about 2 months and my hair was in poor condition afterwards, it felt drier and thinner.

Thanks Marcela for posting Christies website. If anyone goes there ask for Marissa. She is fantastic with hair straightening....she does both kinds.

Re: Anyone get their hair straightened?

I got mine done at Christie's too. I forget who did it but it was great. My hair still needed to be blown out but it was so easy...and it stayed!!!!!!!!!!! Even in humidity in the summer. However....if you left it dry natural it looked like a broom. But as I said, I would blow it fairly easy and then it looked great. I have heard about another method (maybe the Japanese product someone else mentioned?) where you hair supposedly even looks nice dried naturally but I wouldnt be prepared to pay that much money on my hair at this stage. I would consider doing it again except I didn't have permanent color in my hair then. Now I do and I'm afraid it will be too much chemicals for my hair to take. If I could part with the color, I'd do it. Now my hair is such a pain to blow out, I've done it twice since my son was born in October, there's no time so it always feels unkempt.
