And what can you do, other than wear those mouth guards?
I broke a tooth yesterday and was telling a couple co-workers, and one of them said that he grinds his teeth at night and every October (a month into the new school year, of course!) he breaks a tooth.
I had a feeling I was doing this because I had been waking up with an ache in my jaw and my jaw also clicks when I eat. I don't know if they are related and I don't know what can be done.

Flat teeth here!!! I grind really badly. I'm told it sounds like I'm chewing on ice cubes. Haven't broken any teeth, but all of my back ones, top and bottom are almost completely flat, ie no more crevices!
I have a night guard, but I hate to wear it, it's just not comfortable. Don't have TMJ, though.

Re: Anyone grind their teeth at night?
i have bad TMJ,
i was thinking about seeing someone for it recently, only becuase i am getting worried that one day i am going to try to yawn, eat or even talk and my jaw is just going to dislocate!!! or lock on me... and i'm going to be alone when it happens!!! i cannot open my mouth with total clicking sounds... 1st goes the left side then the right side..... i always wonder what it would be like to go one day with that damn clicking noise all day long!!

Hi everyone - Just an anal point of clarification - TMJ stands for Temporo-Mandibular Joint and if you have a problem you don't have TMJ you have TMJ dysfunction
It is very common for children to grind their teeth at night - actually not a disorder - but is associated with complications in adults - if you are bruxing (grinding) your teeth to the point of fracture it is a good idea to go to your dentist and have yourself evaluated and treated

I don't know if I grind them, but I do clench them. The pain in my jaw in the morning is unbearable.

Your right. But it was always called TMJ. Now the correct name is TMD.
I mostly always call it TMJ. It's what I am so familiar with.
