Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

Thinking of getting one but not sure how useful it is? Do you find you can use the wireless connection a lot? If so, where.

Thanks :D

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

Stef, I have a Pocket PC which is suppose to be better than a PDA but I never signed up for the wireless. My friend has a PDA and says the wireless isn't that great...don't know if it is better with a Pocket PC or not. I didn't sign up since my friend said it wasn't to good. That wasn't much help was it?

Sort of like a blackberry but more like a mini PC.

I was told by someone that if you have the wireless card, you can go into certain parts of NYC and hook into a wireless network for free. Or you can go to Starbucks and pay $5 or something and do that.

Im just wondering if anyone has this and if they find it useful.

Oh I think my beams or something because it has beam on it. I really only use it for appointments and weight watcher stuff....like restaruant points and as a point calculator. Never did all that...but you can get them reasonable from ebay. I am always home so no need for the wireless card. Sorry.

I have a wireless card, but NEVER use it. There are so few places that you can...We have them from work, and have wireless access here at the office, but if I'm here....why not plug in?
Unless I was going to starbucks to get some work done (which I am unlikely to do)...it's just not practical for me.

Sage - which PDA do you have? Do you find it useful in general?

I used to have a Palm way back when they were new but found I only used it to hold telephone numbers and scribble notes...so I just switched to a pad. But that was when the screens were black and white and it would run out of batteries every week. I assume there is more to do on the new ones, no?

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

oops...I should have been more clear...
I don't have a PDA, I have a wireless card for my laptop. (and I carry a blackberry which is wireless as well)

I just never use it and never even bother with the trouble....
(partly b/c I find myself leaving my laptop at the office more and more)

Also - I used to have a palm too, and only used it for the same things you listed....
It was just another piece of junk in my purse...lol!

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

I have a laptop but i refuse to bring it with me anywhere. And I absolutely 100% refuse to get a blackberry for work or a cell phone. That just seems like its too easy for people to reach me when I dont want to be reached.

But I thought the PDA would be nice so I could check email and directions, etc... while IM out. But Im still unclear on how it works.

DH had this on his palm and i hated it. the only website it would open up properly was yahoo. it took me a year to get to hotmail, and by that time it wasn't even worth it. it was handy for him because he could read the news on the way to work, but it wasn't worth it because other sites took years to show up. i made him cancel it. don't know if there have been any new improvements that make it better.

Jens had a Sidekick which he loved. It pretty much worked ANYWHERE. E-mail, web-browser, the works.
Now he has a Clie.
I forget which one is considered a pocket PC and which one is more of a PDA. I just used them for the games

you can also go to zocalo's in grand central station and for $1 (with meal purchase) use their wireless service with your pc.

I'm not quite sure how it would work with a PDA as opposed to a laptop w/ wireless card, but there are very few places that are wireless compatable like starbucks is.

But sometimes, I have to take my laptop home and work and it's handy then b/c I can plop on the bed with my laptop and not worry about being plugged in.

ps - resist the blackberry as long as you can....It haunts me!! as does my cell, that my boss has been known to call me on at 6AM!!!!!!!!

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

Im still totally confused.

Susan: Does he have a wireless card or does he have one that has a modem and dials like a cell phone? If he has the wireless, where does he find the wireless network?

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

I don't know if this helps AT ALL....but to be wireless at home with a wireless card, I had to buy the linxsys router and hook it up with my cable modem (there is a kit) and that is how I am wireless at home.

I couldn't just plug the wireless card in and be wireless anywhere.....

As for the more advanced PDA's....I am not sure.

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

Yea, I know I need a wireless thing to work it at home. I dont need that though..i have an office just for computer stuff so I can be on a line for that.

I just cant figure out what this free wireless in NYC everyone is talking about. How does it work and how can I take advantage?

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

I'm clueless as to how on earth it operates. All I know is he pays something like $35/month and he can pick up his e-mail no matter where the hell we are.
I'll ask him later about the difference between one and the other and how they work and e-mail you.

Re: Anyone have a wireless capable PDA?

Thanks susan.

( I dont want to do the pay per month thing. I know how that works but I just dont want to have another bill to pay. )

I was told that in main 'hubs' in nyc like central park etc.. there are free wireless networks that you can hook into if you have a wireless device. Maybe Jens can confirm/clarify for me?
