anyone having their reception at home?

anyone having their reception at home?

I've heard that this is just as expensive, if not more, than having it at a hall, but I'm curious if anyone is doing it. I was watching 'Father of the Bride' last night and I was wondering if anyone is doing it like that. Thanks.

We did our engagement party at my FH's parents house. It was more expensive than if we had just gone to a restaurant and had the party.

By the time you rent the tents, chairs, table, etc. Hire the wait staff, and bartender and caterer.... It adds up!!

thats what i was thinking. my dad has been joking about it for years, and I was wondering how realistic it really is.

There is nothing better than a good party hosted at home. It can really be beautiful - I guess that's why it gets so expensive.

Good Luck to you!!

I'm glad that we have our place booked and I don't have to worry about renting all of those individual things/ hiring all those individual people!!

I think a home reception would be lovely... but I heard it adds up... you need to rent all those little things as well such as knives, forks, plates, etc... as well as the big stuff like tables and chairs... and then you need to have food, figure out how to serve it...get a cake.. ahhh..... it has to be crazy to plan...

And you have to think about if your neighborhood could handle parking. It would also have to end by 11:00 for the noise of music.

Always loved the father of the bride reception.

Living in London right now and it's really traditional to have the reception in a tent at the Bride's parent's home. I was at a wedding last month and in my opinion, it's better to have it at a hall - no clean up!! Plus, these people happened to have a beatuful countryside view, but really, what does your parent's backyard look like?? Mine's not so picturesque!!

think about the bathroom thing. i went to one where the entire house got clogged up and overflowed during the wedding-and it was a 4 bathroom house. you need porta potties, and i never like using those when i am all dressed up! It's what prevented me from having a tent wedding in a vineyard.

on the other hand, i still fantasize about a midsummer nights dream type backyard wedding with fireworks and a grill cooking up swordfish and filet mignon. it can be very homey, warm and wonderful if done correctly.

The best home wedding I ever went to was in Staten Island overlooking a cliff. It was the 4th of July and they had tons of champagne and fireworks after dark. Their house was spectacular. It just worked out for them. I would have loved to do it that way, but for me it just wasn't practical.

Though I didn't do a wedding at home, I did do my sons rehearsal dinner. It was a lot of work and I spent $1200, and I had 50 people.
But it was wonderful!

I did all the cooking, baking, shopping, renting of the tent/tables/chairs, hired wait-staff. All the things that would be needed. I think the worse part was the clean up. That seemed to take forever.

I did do restaurant pricing and it would of cost me half the amount, this is true, but I/we now have wonderful memories of the evening. It was more comfortable and informal. Actually, the entire wedding was outside. From the rehearsal dinner, pre-wedding BBQ, and the ceremony. After the ceremony they had a cake reception indoors with the DJ. In all honesty, it was very nice.
