Anyone in Law School? (or has since graduated?)

Anyone in Law School? (or has since graduated?)

I just finished my first year! (well... kind of)

I'm supposed to be doing this 'writing competition' to compete for a spot on law review, but I have no motivation! I'm so burnt out from finals and I just end up wasting time on the internet or napping. The fact that this is optional and I might not make it anyway is having a major detrimental affect on my productivity.

Can someone give me a kick in the a** needed to get working? It's due Monday and I've barely done anything yet

Crashing.... I graduated from law school a year ago. DO the competition, it stinks and is last thing you want to do after first year exams, but when you are looking for a job and have journal experience or better yet, law review, you will be thankful you did it. I work for a big manhattan firm, and that is one of the first things they look for on resumes. Oh, and congrats on finishing your first year!!!! All down hill from here!

Law review is GREAT if you're going for the big firm job. It really depends on what you do. I didn't do the writing competition because I was not in the top 10% so I knew i wasn't getting the big law firm job...I did tons of internships which made me really figure out what kind of law I wanted to practice and led me to one of the top firms in the field.

Basically, if you want to go into a big firm, GET YOUR a^& OFF THE COUCH AND DO THE PAPER. If not, then make sure you network and do plenty of internships!!!

Any thoughts on secondary journals or is it pretty much only the main 'Law Review' that firms care about?

It really depends on what you want to do. For me I had good grades and didn't want to work at a big firm in the city which I knew from the beginning so I didn't bother competing for it. Do you want to do corporate law and work in the city? If so I would suggest at least trying out.

From my FH who is an attorney:

'It is the most miserable experience, but do it. You need good writing skills to get hired almost anywhere and the job market is very competitive right now. Getting on a journal is jst evidence that you are a good writer and if you're not on a journal, the first question you'll get is 'why not?' when you're on an interview. There is no good answer if you never tried.'

Oh, and this is the 'FH' hijacking Amanda's account. I felt the same way you did about completing the thing, but I followed the advice of the upper classmen and completed it, i didn't think it was particularly good, but I got on a journal. Really, you need to do it for jobs, even if you feel like it's the last thing you want to do.

And firms most certainly like the secondary journals.

PrincessJen, GOOD LUCK!!! It's going to be the worst 4 years of your life (if you decide to be part-time). Touro ***** b/c their curve is so low so you try sooo hard and get sucky grades b/c of the curve. A lot of my friends went to Touro....FM me your profs and I can try and get you outlines.

RE: journals, nobody asked me on my interviews whether I was on a journal or why I was not on a journal. Again, that was because I had so much experience in the field I was interviewing in that it was the only thing they noticed....and the only thing they questioned me about.
