We just heard and felt a big deep booming sound and it shook the ground a bit. Sounded kind of like a sonic boom or an explosion. Did anyone else hear anything???

South shore - Sayville area.
It reminded me of when we hear fireworks in the distance but it was just one loud boom and it's the first time I ever felt it - had my foot on the floor and it vibrated right up my leg.

Hi Karen-I heard it here in Oakdale & my dog went nuts-it scared the crap out of me. I have no idea what it was.

OMG, don't tell me this because this is the EXACT reason why I HATE staying home alone....and, I am home alone. This sounds like when my neighbor's house exploded last year. I have PTSD from it and I get very freaked out.

I'm trying to find something on the news, but I'm in Queens. Maybe try Ch. 12?

Oh that is true. My parents went today. That did end hours ago, but maybe like you said they were flying the planes over.

Re: Anyone in Suffolk hear that big boom?
Well, I am right near where the planes had the show, and I can say, it definitely is not a boom when they go over head Please excuse my freaking. I'm not even near you girls who heard it, but it really brings back very bad issues for me.

we hear the planes overhead all the time...we are right near McGarther airport and there are plenty of fighter jets that pass over. They made this HUGE booming noise and its scary!!

Re: Anyone in Suffolk hear that big boom?
Lisa Rose, good point. It's been a long time since I've heard a sonic boom but I wondered about that being a possibility. The air show makes it more likely. It was just one quick boom and I haven't heard any sirens.
Rachel, they only make the boom if they exceed the speed of sound - they break the sound barrier. The Concord used to do that. The planes at the air show may not have done it during the show, but perhaps as they were going home...
Kelly, I think you must have been closer because it sounded pretty distant to us. The fact that there have been no sirens make me think it probably was a plane breaking the sound barrier, probably out over the water.
Rachel, I wouldn't worry. If it was anything bad we'd easily be hearing sirens all over the place.

I'm sorry I am panicking. I KNOW there is nothing to panick over, but my anxiety takes over still sometimes. So just ignore me, I'm being irrational.

Re: Anyone in Suffolk hear that big boom?
Rachel, it's nothing to apologize about. I know how you feel. I was on the 6th floor of a building that collapsed - 80% of it ended up in the parking lot next door and I only got out because I was near a fire escape in back by the wall left standing. That was 15 years ago and I still occasionally get shaky if I'm in a building and the floor shakes.
