how long you have to get your name changed?

i really cant take off work anytime soon, between the 2.5 weeks i took for the wedding/honeymoon and then my grandfather passing away as soon as i got home, i was out of work for almost 3.5 weeks..........

and whats the process?
social security first? then DMV?
and since i live in NJ now, do i still go to a social security in NY since we got married in NY?

I have no idea if there's a time limit. As for the order of things, SS and DMV - it doesn't make a difference which one is first. Either or. Then once you're done with that, you can go to the bank and do your bank accounts. Credit cards can be done over the phone or email, and then passport is last as you have to mail in your original marriage license.

I was told I have 6 months from the date of the marriage certificate to change my name.

All I needed to do the bank was my marriage license... i didn my license then SS

I don't know if there is any limit. I know there's several 09 brides who still have yet to change their names though!

You can change your name at SS by mail.

NY DMV requires personal appearance - but I plan to go at 8 or 8:30 am and just tell my employer I'm coming in a little late that morning.
