Do you really think you need a lawyer just for a speeding ticket you could be talking alot of $$$$$$$$$

I got a speeding ticket for doing 55 in a 30....I HAD to go to court. I plead not-guilty (I didnt have a lawyer but this also was my first offense) and there was a court appointed 'lawyer' or what ever he was in the room with the judge. they did their lawyer talking and I got a broken speedometor violation...no points but $100 fine!! I said thank you...walked out...paid the fine and drove home very careful!!

Unless this is not your first offense, you were only going 19 miles over the speed limit...I do not think you need a lawyer. It may cost more to have a lawyer than to just go to court and see what happens.

If you are fighting the ticket then the police officer has to show up too. If he doesn't (which happens quite often) the judge will reschedule you for another appearance. If the police officer doesn't show up at that appearance the ticket will usually be thrown out. Good luck.

PS:This is not from my own experience, but from my sister who is a speed demon.

LOL speed demon.

Well, I wasn't going to get a lawyer, but it is my 2nd ticket

And, its not the cost of the ticket that I'm worried about, its the cost of insurance, the way I look at it, if the lawyer gets my points down even 1 more than I could, he paid for himself in insurance.

Whats worse is that I got a ticket in 1998, it got lost until last year, and then I got the points on trial date, 4 years after the fact! So instead of being off probation 3 years ago if the ticket went straight to court, I'm still on it!

So, in other words, I think I need a lawyer for this one.....

WOW~ he is soooo lucky. I could only dream of getting that kind of treatment.

So you think no need for the lawyer then huh? Maybe I could make it go to trial and get the lawyer... hmm.... now I don't know what to do.

beth...nassau county is so backed up with traffic tickets that maybe you should think of what I did...

got a ticket in Jan 1998...35 in a 25 school zone!!!
pled not guilty...they tried to plea bargain...most people were getting seatbelt violations (no points), but since mine was a school zone they only offered me failure to signal (2 points AND a higher fine) so I said no...I'll go to trial...

they brought me back again...tried to plea bargain..same thing...I said no...they told me that they weren't ready for a trial (they can do this once...and you can do this once to delay the process)

in the end in Nov 2001...I had my trial...it was scary...I did it by myslef...and lost...but I started crying (for real...I just couldn't help myself)...the judge lowered it to $55 and no points went on my license since it was almost 4 years later (points can only be on for 18 months)

just FYI: from my understanding...Suffolk and NYC are faster...and this might not happen

35 in a 25! Urgh, sometimes Nassau drives me crazy.
When you had your trial, did the cop have to show up?

I was thinking about doing this...after all is said and done, do you think it was a good idea going to trial?

Thank you so much for the advice, this is the first place I've found that people really help in these situations....
