ok ladies so i love photography and its just a hobby but ive been saving for a great camera and today finally went and got one.. i bought the EOS cannon Rebel xsi... it was very and i still cant believe i made such a purchase.. anyway im home now playing with it and realized that the zoom i have to turn the lense.. and well thats not really what i wanted.. but i love everything else about the camera.. any suggestions?? should i just suck it up b.c its a great camera or should i return it and get something else?? i really should have done my reseach before purchasing.. i get excited and just buy s tupid i know!

You dont have to turn it..hold it down half way and it will focus.

Most cameras with that kind of lens you will have to zoom and focus by hand I believe.
Go onto LIF... a lot of the women there SWEAR by the Nikon D40/D60/D80 (I'm saving for a D60). They know their stuff over there (esp. Nrthshrgrl).

I have a old canon - not sure if it's a rebel or what - but it has a manual and auto focus setting. you should be able to change the setting, meg. maybe take it to the store you bought it at and let them show you? and if by chance it's only a manual focus, you can return it.

I'm a photography geek!! Haven't gone digital yet, b/c I LOVE my film camera! I have an old Canon Rebel G. On the side of the lens, there's a tiny button to shift, 'manual' so you can turn the lens to focus yourself, and 'AF' for Auto Focus. If you push the shutter button down slightly, it will AutoFocus for you. But....... the whole point of getting an SLR camera like this (single lens reflex) is to be able to trade lenses for what you're doing...... to put on a telephoto lens to take distance shots, a macro lens for extreme close-ups. SLR cameras will give you crisp shots.

I just got the XSI also, it is a great camera! With the digital rebel's you have to zoom manually, but the focus can be set to auto or manual, depending on the setting at the top of the camera. Good luck with the camera, it is fantastic!
