Anyone know about public schools in/around Baltimore, Philly, DC?

DH and I are considering moving out of NY in a few years, and since we will (hopefully) be starting our family later this year or early next, schools are a big part of our decision.

Anyone know about the schools in any of these areas? We want to be near a large city, but in the suburbs. Similar to LI, but hopefully a better cost of living. And we want to be within a reasonable driving distance to NY so that we can visit family regularly.

Thanks in advance!

We live in Philadelphia, which is about 1 1/2 - 2 hours to LI... just bought a house in a suburb of philadelphia that is about 15 minutes from downtown, which has the best school system in the area (cheltenham township). Cost of living is MUCH better than LI, although the property taxes are high because of the school system... FM me if you want more details...

We moved to Columbia, MD 6 months ago (from NYC). It is beautiful here, and its a great place to bring up a family. It is a planned community about 20 min. from Baltimore and 40 min from DC.

I teach middle school here and I can tell you the schools in Howard County and Montgomery County are excellent!

The only reason we may wind up moving back to NY is that my husband cant stand being this far from his family on LI... But if we have to be anyplace other than NY, it would be here! It is about 3.5-4 hour drive from LI.

I went to school outside Baltimore and can tell you the public schools in Baltimore are not that good at all. Alot of people send their kids to private or parochial schools. But the towns surrounding Baltimore )the suburbs) are mostly nice and have a good school system - for example, Towson, Pikesville.

Merf is correct. A lot of people end up sending their children to a private school because some of the schools in and around Baltimore City/County are rough. But some of the other schools (Towson, Pikesville, Dulaney) are excellent. It really depends on where you are. They also have these magnet programs that allow high school kids to pretty much choose where they want to go as long as they are in a specific program.

My DH used to teach in Baltimore City and now he teaches in the county. If you have any specific questions about a certain school or area, just send me a FM and I will get you an answer

My old boyfriend was from Chevy Chase, MD, and the schools there were very good. Nearby towns that are also nice are Bethesda, Silver Springs, and parts of Northern Virginia.

My sister and brother in law live in Falls Church, VA (Northern VA, very close to DC). He teaches foreign language at Langley High School in McLean, VA. I believe McLean is a rather affluent community (or at least parts of it are) but Langley High School is an EXCELLENT school - and not just cause my brother in law teaches there! It was ranked in the top 15 best high schools in the country. . .
