just go to a local ATM and use your credit card for most purchases

this is 100% right!

Best exchange rate is credit card. Also, there are several American Express exchange centers in Europe. We went to the one in Rome about 5 times

yes ATMs are the best way to do it. and credit cards will give the best rate. you can always exchange a small amount if you want some cash before you can get to an ATM. depending on where you are going, some countries arent big on using credit cards. for example, germany is a country like this. big cities yes, but some small towns do not take credit cards at all. also check with your bank that you can use it overseas. you can only withdraw from checking accounts and your PIN needs to be a four number PIN.

When we went to Canada, their currency exchange was $1.oo U.S. to $1.15 Can. But everywhere we went excepted U.S. dollars you just ended up with Canadian change.

Very true - I travel a lot and I always use my ATM and credit card - They definitely give you the best rates. If you need cash ASAP and can't find an ATM at the airport there will definitely be a change house at the airport.

BTW, just a tip: If you don't travel often you might want to warn your credit card company about your travels otherwise they might find your expenses suspicious and not authorize purchases.

i would exchange a few hundred dollars at the airport and the rest at a bank that offers a great exchange rate. the airport's exhange rate is a rip off.

i lived in prague for 6 months and relied only on credit cards and atms whenever i traveled through europe. hotels and even the booths at airports usually charge a fee to exchange the money for you.
