anyone know anything about health insurance?

anyone know anything about health insurance?

I gave notcie at my job and will soon have no health insurance. I could continue my coverage through Cobra, but I hear that's very expensive. I could go under DH's policy, but to put a spouse on his policy will be really pricey too. Does anyone know any alternatives? I would 'hopefully' only need it for a few months. I figure it won't take me more than a month or two to get a new job and then three months at that job for the insurance to kick in. So I would need coverage for like 4-6 months.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Yay- congratulations on quitting. That took guts. I wish I could quit without having another job lined up.

as for insurance, I thought COBRA was the only way to go. Jean did that when before he new job's insurance kicked in. We weren't married yet)It might be less expensive to go on Steve's insurance.

I don't know how gutsy it was to quit without another job lined up, but it had to be done. Working nights is so miserable and it's making me a miserable person. I actually told them that until I find another job and until they find a replacement for me that I would continue working my two day shifts. I feel kind of like a sucker for suggesting it, but DH and I aren't millionaires and I really can't be without an income for too long.

I don't know if there is a cheaper coverage than COBRA or through your DH's job. Compare the costs of both.

Another plan that I know of I think is called HealthyNY rn by NY State. It is based on income but I'm not sure of all of the other eligibility requirements. If other insurance is available to you such as DH's job or Cobra you may not be eligible. Also not sure if it is something you can get just for short term. But may be worth looking into.

I am so proud of you!! It's definitely hard to quit a job when there isn't another one lined up - but I've done it too - you need to save your own sanity!! Best of luck!

Cobra is gonna run you a minimum of $350 a month, it could be as high as $500...Its probably a LOT cheaper to get added to DH's policy, BUT, make sure thats an option, I work for a large health insurance company, and people can only be added for marriage and birth if its not during open enrollment period. I think Cobra if only for a few months is worth it. These days Dr's charge at least $100-$150 an office visit, a bad cold and some RX's could hurt you if you had to pay on your own.

Look into Healthy NY..its offered by many insurance companies, BUT most insurance companies by law cannot offer you a direct payment policy if Cobra is an option.

FM me if you need advice or more info( Im half asleep, not sure if Im forming full sentances!)

Hey Michal!
I'm proud of myself, but I'm totally freaked out too! I have never been without a job before and it scares the crap out of me to think I'm going to have no money coming in. I've applied for a few jobs already and in a worst case scenario, I can always go back to retail while I continue to look for a job. I worked at Versace part-time when I was in college and made killer money. If I did it full-time I would probably be making more than I am now — and the benefits were better too.

I would definitely compare the price difference between Cobra and your husband's. I know cobra is pretty expensive.

I know you said your job had gotten crappy- did they switch your schedule--you used to just have 1 night, right?

Best of luck with the job search!
